Left the MI Jetties at 3:30am, no need to report on the seas, I think everyone has a pretty good idea. Lines in and picked up a dolphin within a half hour. Came unglued with three fish in the next hour or so. It was (**()ed frustrating trying to worked marks on the GPS with 3-4ft NE chop beating the hell out of your from all directions.
Around 10am the long-rigger line popped and the rod doubled over. Drag began pulling off in 4ft spurts and I thought GREAT, the drag is fouling up. That’s when the fire-works started. About 100ft behind the boat a nice blue realizes he’s hooked and loses it. Everything was rigged with 80lb fluoro wind-ons so it didn’t take him long to part the leader but still stuck around the boat giving us a show for another 30 seconds or so. The fish took off with such fury that the blue/white lil stubby lure pulled up over the crimp/swivel onto the main-line. At least we didn’t lose the lure.
Walked up to the cooler to grab a drink shortly after this episode to find a nice bunch of bananas sitting on the ice. I proceeded to argue with the culprit who swore he needed the bananas bc he “cramps up”. I calmly reassured him that with the 50 degree, 18knt, NE winds, he would not be cramping today and forced him to chuck the fruit.
We still lost a few more fish to cut offs and run offs but our luck turned around after pulling a couple blackfin out of a school chasing flyers on top, and snagging another dolphin on our way back to the hill. Got beat up a little but all-in-all a fun day on the water.
3/4 Fish boated were picked up on the lil stubby blue/white with an 80lb fluoro wind-on
One dolphin was caught on a black/purple flash ilander behind a yellow bird
Trolled around 7knts all day
Never found water over 71.1
Worked on the farm Sunday and Monday and added some asparagus and strawberries to the weekend harvest. The credit for this picture goes to Tyler Nance
