We fished yesterday for the Hilton Head Island Shootout. Like everyone else said the ocean beat us up on the ride out and off and on throughout the day. We ran to Outcrop area and caught and released a nice sail to start the day near scattered weeds in 140 ft. Then picked up 2 dolphin in same area. Got to Outcrop and nothing going on between several boats. We made the call to pull lines and run down to Edisto banks area in search of the wahoo. We got to Royal terrace and picked up a nice blackfin and a few more dolphin. Then as we were trolling beam sea headed into it, one of my shimano 50s launched out the gunnel and disappeared into the blue. That sucked!! All day the dolphin were eating the wahoo baits and ignoring their usual favorites. The temp jumped 2 degrees btn outcrop and EB and the water was real nice blue. Trolled inshore a little bit and found a nice weedline but nothing really going on there. Caught a 20 lb wahoo on the way back to the ledge but not the stud we were looking for. Joined a few other boats at main Edisto Banks ledge and everyone was having slow day on wahoo with several fish lost and only 1 or 2 caught. Ended the day with 1 hoo, 1 sail, 1 tuna and 5 dolphin.
We made the call as a group not to run to HH to weight a 20lb fish and eventhough i was bummed, im glad we didn’t go cause…I heard from everyone that fishing for the tourney was real slow but a 55 and a mid 40s had been weighed in. Congrats to the boats that focused on and crushed the dolphin yesterday.
