Got the opportunity to fish with the J Team on Mayhem yesterday on a last minute effort that turned out to be a good call. We headed south to 226 and got beat up pretty bad on the way out for what turned into a three hour run. Lots of life in the 250ft range but decided to press on. First round was a bit shaky with rough seas and not much action so we ran back to about 350ft and went to work. It was slow until noon and just as our morale was getting tested we had an epic knockdown and screaming drag; funny how one fish can change everything. I saddled up and got my a$$ beat for the next 20 minutes. We heard some crews over the horn that caught a couple nice makos throughout the day, and I figured this had to be a big shark, big hoo, or a 1970 Volkswagen. Captain John did a bang up job of keeping the fish to the port and I finally saw him turn over and realized it was a wahoo and the heat turned up. A few more cranks and two precision gaffs and it was a done deal. After a few attaboys and lots of ice we got the spread back out and finished out. After few more knock downs and a nice mahi to show, we headed to the barn on calm seas so we could get to Haddrell’s scale before 1800. I’ll let the crowd speculate on weight for a while before confirmation. Needless to say it was a bang up day, great effort and lots to talk about. Most of the action took place around 250ft and the temp was 76ish. Hot colors of the day were black, red, blue, and purple… go figure. Can’t wait to smear some more blood on Mayhem with the J Team. Tight lines -
