Me and DoubleSea Left at 4:30. Made it out the Edisto Banks around 8-ish. Water temp was 68. So we headed to the 226. Got to 75 degree water and saw something busting the surface. Started trolling and it was SLOW. We trolled out the 1500ft and had picked up a few small mahi. Water got up to around 77. We went almost 2 hrs without a knock down so we headed in to 200ft. Found a weak rip with small amounts of trash and pollen. We pull 5 more off that line. Head in at 3. 30mph in. Nice day on the ocean but slow.
We learned how difficult it is to troll with 2 people and 6 lines. The first fish was a cluster. We knew better but put the boat in neutral and it took a while to untangle the line from each other and the prop[:I][:I]
The next fish was better but did get wrapped around one of the other lines. Almost had that fish to the boat and another fish took…The tangled line and POP. there goes that line but we did get the first to the boat. Everything went smooth after that…well except for the “mate” gaffing a fish and letting go of the gaff. The fish is 8 feet from the boat with the gaff sticking straight up in the air. He was still on the hook (thankfully). After he attempted to grab the gaff, then I attempted, we finally got the fish, the hook, and gaff in the boat.
It was not funny at the time, but it is now. Sorry DoubleSea, I had to tell the story.
9 mahi.
Lots of these “Dolphin”
First of the season (small but big enough for a sandwich)
Fishb8,
congrats on the catch. Glad you had a good day and everyone made it home safe! Quastione for you if you don’t minjd. It looked like your daisy chain was a line about 20 feet behind the boat but the line looked tied to the boat I didn’t see it on a pole. Am I mistaken or no, I have not seen this technique before. Thanks
Fishing with 2 people is a pain esp. if no autopilot. We learned the lesson long ago about taking the boat out of gear and fishing. Wait till all 6 lines go off with 2 people, it gets interesting.
Beats a good day at work any ol day!
Will agree about fishing with just two people, more often then not we fish with just two of us on the boat. With some planning it can be done pretty easily tho. Auto pilot with a remote helps considerablly as does having the teasers on reels mounted to the boat so they can be readily deployed and retrieved. Having everything in it’s proper place at all times is critical. We usually have 8 lines dragging when we fish and it can get interesting to say the least when everything gets hit at the same time but after a few chinese fire drills it becomes a lot more manageable.
A little off subject, but looking at upgrading my current boat to a 23-25’ boat. Fishb8, what size tank does your boat have…What year is your boat and what would I expect to pay for a boat like this in the year range of 2000-2004…
23, I never even turned it on. The reason is as soon as I hit transmit, the Lowrance GPS error with “GPS module not responding”. I have not got the chip for the Raymarine, nor have I put in ALL the coordinates. So I decided to leave it off for this trip. Did not want to be 70+ offshore and have any issues…
