Not quite the stellar day on the big pond, but not too bad either. Beautiful glassy seas in the stream. Total for day, 8 gaffer dolphin, 1 nice sailfish that got hooked right in the end of its bill to end the day off. Bonus of the day was sighting a pod of about 6 pilot whales that came right up near us. Buddies fishing near us caught a 50 and 40 lb bull.

Too cool! Pilot whales eh? That’s one I haven’t seen out there yet. We did see a right whale last year. Those things are huge! Kept our distance from it. Congrats on the catch. Still waiting for my 1st sail, or any billfish for that matter.

Yeah, saw them a ways off just laying in the water and couldn’t figure out what they were, got a bit closer and just thought big dolphins, then they sounded and came up about 100ft from boat and could tell they were pilot whales. About 6 of em, 12 to 15ft long, real rounded head on em.

If you are seeing pilot whales, then that still gives me hope to see some yellowfins or bigeyes this year. Up in the Oregon Inlet area, the pilot whales are a pretty common sighting (like sea turtles here). Maybe that means that the “conditions” are right for other inhabitants that live in areas similar to the pilots.
