I’ve tried a few times but today was my first topwater fish of the year. Got two, but had to search for them and pull out all the tricks to get them to take. They would bump it and swirl at it. Had to really “sell” the wounded bait fish act.
Also found a heavy trout near a dock I’ve never fished before.
Ended with a few mid slot reds under a dock. Tide was starting to move and the bite was improving when it was time to come in.
Hey help us out a little more, no tide or time of day or type of water, I mean come on give a dog a bone. I buy the jigs, the trout tricks (both are great) but still need more then fish photos to get my skills up. Not being sour just requesting some more info from the king of trout. The only top water strikes I ever get is on the medium size mirror lure that looks like a mullet, so if you want to name some good ones for me to start throwing it would be greatly appreciated.

BOATLESS
This trip was pre-dawn till about 11 am. It was high rising to high outgoing. Its probably hard to see but I was using a skitterwalk for topwater. I also use a spook Jr and sometimes a chug bug. Thats all I use. I think its best to become proficient at a few reliable plugs rather than throwing the tackle box at them. When you are in the fish try a skitter and a spook. One with high pitch (rattle) and one with low pitch (clack). It can be a night and day difference. Hope this helps.
Mac, Ralph is not on this site. SSWA is this Wed. Fried flounder and fly fishing seminar by Jeremy Mehlhaff. Gonna be a great mtg. BTW Ralph nor I give charters. We donate trips sometimes though
I think you can go late afternoon for TW as well. My limited understanding is that fish are not comfortable on the surface in bright light so low light at early morning or evening should be about the same?
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.
That’s correct in a broad sense. Best thing is to keep your eyes and ears open. If you see a fish strike on top then try a plug no matter what time of day or conditions.
