Fished with my father yesterday as the wind kept the smaller bayboat inshore rather than offshore. Opted to buy a few dozen muds for my dad as he is not a lure fisherman. Wow, have prices went up is all I can say! Left Bushy Park around 9am with lots of sunscreen and swarms of gnats around. We rode through yellowhouse and clouter on our way to the harbor just to see if we could locate some menhaden or finger mullet on the flood tide. Sure enough, one throw of the net and the back live well was blacked out with 3-5" menhaden. Stoked and upset I just spent $15 on muds, we moved on. Set-up on a spot that I always wanted to try for big trout as the tide was falling. We fished the nice rocky drop for 2hrs, but it wasn’t meant to be. Frustrated, I plugged the trolling motor in and rigged a jerkbait up and my lil’ old jighead rig to grind it out. Well, it was a grind for the next 4hrs, but we managed about 14 trout ranging from 6" to 18" with 6 fat keepers. We released another 5 15-16" reds, too. Funny thing of the day was that we never caught one fish on the menhaden, just jerkbaits and those expensive mud minnows, . Also, my trout spots had reds on them and the red spots only had trout. Puzzling, but another safe and fun day on the water in Charleston. On the way in, opted to ride around to the freshwater side of Bushy Park rather than sit an hour or so for the water to come up. I forgot how beautiful that Cooper is!
