Captain John of Big Tide Charters rescued 4 people out near Ft Sumter today. Great job Captain! Always love to see the boating community come together to help people out!
Did you hear what happened?

They swamped a 14ft John boat in some choppy water.

After being released, a lot of fish die, but a lot of them live also.

Yeah it’s bad when you go to the boat ramp and your cussin the whole time.

Glad nobody got hurt. I do wish SC made the boating safety course mandatory. There is value in it. I can’t tell you how many “bought the boat 4 days ago” cases I’ve worked this year. It’s insane.

Man, they don’t let people jump in a tractor trailer rig without a licence. Think they even know what tide does?
“Keep your nose in the wind and your eyes along the skyline”
One problem making something like this mandatory is you have a group of people out there that “don’t the government telling me what to do” regardless of how much sense it makes to mandate something. Some people have already shown, and show on a regular basis, they don’t have the capacity to keep from harming themselves and/or others while on the water and as illustrated here, it typically stems from a lack of knowledge or even basic understanding. We can’t get a driver’s license without taking a test (and passing it). Why should operating a boat be any different?

Something needs to be done about these duma$$es . I hope the boat driver license includes training on how to put in their boat in a timely manner. I don’t even go out on the weekend any more.

Every time I see someone in a jon boat heading past the grillage, I wonder if they are brave, stupid, lucky or crazy.

I once took a report of a 24ft pontoon adrift 40 miles offshore. Found them to be just fine, not adrift at all. Saw the same boat on this forum a few days later, someone took a photo of it and said it was 60 miles offshore. People do crazy things.

Boat launch training would be no more effective than passing the parallel parking portion of the driver’s test. Until you’ve done it several times, under different conditions, you’re simply not going to be very good at it. To be honest, I don’t get mad when I see someone struggling to back/launch their boat. Like I said, not everyone was born knowing how to do this. What does drive me crazy is the person that waits until they hit the ramp to prep their boat or even worse, back into the ramp and then sit there and wait for their fishing buddy to meet them at the ramp. That and keeping your headlights on are the things that drive me the craziest.

Wow…14 ft. jon boat…with 4 people…in the harbor…you just can’t fix stupid. I agree 100% with Bangstick…you should have to pass a written test to demonstrate you know the laws and a physical test to show you have the skills to operate a craft on public waters…it’s getting ridiculous out there.

Good to hear you got them home safe, Capt. People don’t understand how fast things go sideways if 1. your unprepared and under-equipped or 2. don’t know how to handle things. Boats can sink in 5 seconds.
Back when I managed a marina and ran trips in Savannah, we would offer “Boatsmanship” courses for novice boaters. The marina had some extreme current and was tough to dock in. Unfortunately, nearly all of our courses were booked after putting a nice gash or crack in the side of their brand new boat. Or sitting on a mudbar for 6 hours waiting for the tide to come back in. It makes me cringe when they say, “I didn’t know the tide changes 8 feet???”
My most recent course was started and ended abruptly when the boat owner did not realize the boat he just bought had a two-stroke and burned the oil the puts in it. “I thought we just needed to change the oil every few months???”
But we’ve all been a novice at some point, right?
