4 Stroke questions???

Bought a new to me boat with twin 06 150 hp Yamaha 4 strokes. Now i know nothing about these motors at all… except they only burn 6 gph each at cruise, and everyone in the Carolina’s get wood when you talk about them.

I have not ordered a MX manual yet, so i am clueless on how to maintain them.

How long between…
oil changes
plugs
foot oil
impellars
What kinda lower unit oil do you use? Quiksilver?
fuel filters?
water seperator every 6 months i am guessing?
Am i missing something?
Thinking the above are things i can do myself.

motor has high hours… 700 on computer.
I am sure there is special adjusting at certain hours… maybe 500 and 1,000?

I am clueless! I know all fluids, and impellers were just changed, but that is all i know. This was a repo boat i bought from a dealer and had surveyed. Didn’t want a repo, but it was the only one in my budget.

I am used to 1993 Mercs that i just change plugs every 2 hours and go like hell [:0]

Thanks for the help in advance

I lost a lower unit last year because of a bad output shaft seal. I stopped using gear oil and started using a product called Cornhead grease by John Deere. Its a grease designed to shear when the gears are in motion. The long and short of it, its like a hard grease so it does not leak out through a bad seal, but is the same viscosity as 220 gear oil (90 weight) when in motion. Now don’t get me wrong, if you have a blown seal it will come out, but it has to be bad. You can also see it around the shaft, looks like bright green grease on the output shaft or skeg. This is not a fix for bad seals, but is a lot more forgiving if something was to happen when running.

I think you change the oil every 100 hours the plugs, gear oil and filters are same as two stroke

Congrats on the purchase. My Dad’s boat has twin ‘06 F150’s (26’ Sea Hunt). They have no problems jumping that thing on plane and giving and maintaining an excellent cruise at 3600 rpm. What I like about Yamaha is that they offer the owners and parts manual online for download. My rec would be to use the factory specified lubricants and filters with exception to gear lube which you could substitute Mercury high performance + lube.

If your engines have not had their timing belts replaced they are due. Inspect your zincs and replace when inspection indicates they are substantially deteriorated. I replace my water pumps and thermostats yearly. I once lost a trim motor to corrosion and now I coat the motor housings with fiberglass resin. This may or may not be recommended but it has worked well for me. Sixty miles offshore is a bad place to find out something has quit working. Good luck with your new rig. I think you will absolutely love your new engines.

Thanks for the info. I downloaded the manual, and think i am good to go.

Didn’t realize they had it on the web.

Change plugs oil gear oil fuel filers water separator every 100 hours. the water separator is bes to be a yamaha 10 micron filter or any WIX 10 micron filter works best. the only thing OI can say that i would change on like a 500 our mark sould be the filter inside of the VST tank. It is a little difficult to do the first time. but once you do it once its easy. but like i said only every 500 hours or if you see a drop in high speed. there is a filter in there with a small mesh that gets clogged up over time and will rob you of fuel mileage and power. Best thing about four strokes, they start every time, and no oil tanks onboard to make a mess of a locker or under your console. good luck and tight lines

HairBall. How does that 26 seahunt ride? I used to work on them all the time but never got to ride in one.

like harborshocker said, make sure you install a 10 micron fuel filter. I personally suggest the racor 3213, it has a clear bowl, so you can see if you have any junk in it. the yamaha is a great filter, you just cant tell if has anyting in it. I also wouldnt change my spark plugs in a 4 stroke every 100 hours, more like every 200-400

Harbor Shocker,

To answer your question on how the Sea Hunt 26 rides. All around its pretty good. It’s a little hard to compare to other boats I’ve been on in the Southeast b/c my Dad’s boat runs out of Narragansett Bay, RI. Most of the time we are running out of the Sakonnet River which is shaped like a funnel open to the Atlantic facing SE. Large ocean swells enter and stack up. However the water is 70-90 feet deep so the waves stay rounded on top; not peaks. I call them “chubby” waves b/c they are big and fat…no way of running fast and punching through them…I don’t care what your driving. In these conditions and the usual NE slop it stays dry, is very stable and excels and running at lower speeds while remaining on plane. The only quirky part of running the boat in staying on top of keeping the trim tabs adjusted for the conditions and here’s why. The bow likes to get a little light partially because of the huge flare so you need to trim down. However, if you trim down too much the bow digs a little too much because the entry is very fine without too much buoyancy. Once you get the hang of setting the tabs for the conditions it is a very comfortable ride.
