4 stroke vs 2 stroke mpg

I have a 26’ Sea Pro CC with a 2000 Johnson 250hp Ocean Pro. I get around 1.2 \ 1.5 mpg on an offshore trip. Going about 27 mph out 60 miles, trolling around then about 27 mph coming back in. WOT is approx. 35 mph ± depending on # of people etc…

Thinking about repowering to 4 stroke(s). Thought about 2 Honda 200s or a 350 Yamaha or something in that range +- 50hp.

What can I expect in fuel economy compared to what I have now ?

Is one motor better than two just for the ability to get back if one goes out or is there other reasons for two \ is it more economical to run two smaller 4 strokes than one big one…?

My 2 cents is go with twins. MPG will be about the same, my 26’ has twin 175’s Suzuki 4 strokes I get 2.5 MPG at 4000 rpms/ 32 mph.I had twin 140’s 4 stroke before, same fuel mileage as I am getting now at 32mph cruise because I am turning 600 rpms less.

I know this isn’t apples to apples but …

twin 200’s should make that boat scream

i would look towards twins also, but if you want to stay with a single, a suzuki 300 would be a good choice. You would see an improvement in fuel mileage with a 4 stroke or a DI style 2 stroke. Single vs twins both have advantages and disadvantages, but I have come in on one motor too many times to ever consider a 60 mile trip offshore on only 1 motor

I guess it’s just a matter of what you feel comfortable with. I’m sure twin 200s 4 strokes would be nice and probably get around twice the MPG. I’d rather have two if for no other reason than to get back like Jeffro said if one goes out.

Capt. Ed…How much did the top speed increase from twin 140s to twin 175s…? I know they turn less RPMs to get the same speed but just curious about the top speed.

A person might get about twice the MPG but you’d never recoup your financial investment if you only take the boat out 6 or 8 times a yr… But then with family and friends aboard, peace of mind is priceless…

Any other examples of MPG on 4 vs 2 strokes on a 26’ ± ? I was thinking it would have been 3X the MPG, at least…

If the boat will handle twins, what’s wrong with twin F150s? That boat would operate fine and have higher WOT with those motors. That’s not an unusually heavy boat. I’d much rather have twin F150s than a single F350 that weighed a half a ton by itself…

I believe it’ll handle twins - it’s rated for 400hp. A couple F150s weigh about 100# more than a F300 or F350. A pair of 150s, 175s or 200s would be the way to go.

I’m just trying to see what MPG other people are getting using 4 strokes. I always thought it would be around 3 or 4 MPG on a 26’ boat with a couple 150s or 200s… Maybe I was being optimistic…

Anyone else have any fuel #s they can share…?

twin df 140’s would be nice

Yamaha Performance Website.

Shows different motors on different boats in a test type environment. Good information here…

With 140’s WOT was 43 mph@ 6200 rpms and the 175’s WOT is 52 mph @ 6100 rpms

I believe 4 mpg in a 26’ boat is wishful thinking, 3 mpg is posible with twins. I agree with twin 150’s on that boat.

It really depends what you want 2 stroke has the power 4 stroke has fuel mileage I am a yamaha and Johnson/evinrude fan both have been good for me.
This is a really interesting video might be B.S. but you can decide and btw I would stay away from suzukis and hondas they are junk

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

A pair of 150 ETECs do as good or better than a pair of Yam 150s 4 strokes.

Boat tests…off the websites:

Edgewater 245CC - 3400# - 2 Yam 150s - 2.76 mpg @ 3500 rpms - 27.9mph.

Proline 26 SS - 4400# - 2 ETEC 150s - 2.6 mpg @ 3500 rpms - 29.7 mph.

The Edgewater is 1000# heavier and the ETECS are still right there on mpg and faster @ the same rpms… I’ve heard good things about the ETECs. Strong and economical to run but you still have to add the oil…

Anyone here own ETECs - what do you think about them…?

The DNR stopped me a few weeks ago for their “safety check” he had an etec 150 on his boat I asked him how he liked the motor. He said he hated it, I didn’t question why.

For what is it worth I stated with an OX-66 225 Yamaha, got right at 2 MPG on a full day off shore. Switched to a 250 HPDI Yamaha, still got right at 2 MPG. After blowing several power heads on the HPDI went to the F250 Yamaha still get 2 MPG; but I save almost $30 per trip because I am not having to buy oil!

I don’t know why someone would hate a 150 E-tec. Quite, no smoke and a H*ll of a lot of torque out od the hole and a top end you can’t handle. 56 mph on a 197 pioneer T-top.

i have twin 4 stroke 150’s on a 26ft KW and we see 1.8-2.0 mpg average, this is loaded heavy for fishing…

if i had to do it all over again a single 350 yamaha is what i would have done…better mileage, higher top speed and 1/2 the maintenance.

I’m thinking the same thing…single Yamaha 350 and be done with it.

That should be a big part of the decision making.
