40 Force issues

I have a 94 Force on a 17’ polar craft that my father-in-law gave us this summer and it has been running like a champ all season. I finally got a good weather day to try fishing the jetties, so I go.

I was trolling on the outside of Dynamite Hole and after about 10 minutes of trolling at/or around 1500-2000 RMPs the motor revs up about 300 RPMs and seems to chokes out. That was a awful feeling even with SeaTow bill fully paid! But, I squeeze the bulb once, she starts right up and runs great.

I run down to Shem Creek at 3500-4000 RPMs no issues, but fast idling at 1500-2000 RPMs to almost the bridge, again she revs up a little and dies. I decide its time to head in and run hard at 5000 RPMs to Wappoo with no issues. Fast idle looking at the boats in the marine and again same thing after only 5 minutes this time. Again, I squeeze the bulb once, she starts right up and runs and I get my a$$ to the landing.

Sorry to be long winded but it was a definite pattern to its madness! So where would you suggest I start?

Thanks in advance!
Greg

Usually when they speed up right before they quit, they have run out of gas. I would start by replacing the primer bulb. Check the fuel line for leaks, the fuel pickup tube for a clog. I doubt it’s an engine problem. Fuel system related.

Thanks Larry that is what we were thinking. Its more than time for a bulb replacement.

If you have a built in fuel tank, your anti siphon valve might have gone tango uniform.

Also with a built in tank, the dirt dauber/mud wasps will sometimes plug the vent line.

Yes I have a built in tank and that would make sense. I did notice a lot of blow back last time I fueled up. I did not think anything of it really because it has always been touchy. Luckily all this is easily accessible!

Those (() dirt daubers cost me a Chris V carb job on my last boat. (() thing made itself right at home in the carb while I completely rebuilt the interior of the boat. Got finished with the boat to send it right to the shop!

Clogged vent. If it can’t suck air, it can’t pass fuel.

IM BETTING FUEL PUMP OR AIR LEAK
LOW RPMS FUEL PUMP IS TO WEAK TO KEEP UP

So I went simple to start and replaced the bulb Friday night. The family and I hit our usual honey holy, and she ran good. I fasted idled for close a 1 mile along with idling while hunting for bait.

I am noticing the motor running rougher at idle to fast idle running and for some reason the motor is smoking like crazy for the first 5 minutes of running… I still feel like something else is going on but now I could be paranoid. Then again Chris you maybe right.

I intend on replacing all the lines from the tank to the Motor this week just to be sure, but I got rained out yesterday!
