Checked one off the bucket list on Nov 9th/10th. Headed to Guatemala to fish with Bluebayouguatemala. These guys are top notch. The mission: Sailfish on the fly. The first day we raised 20 plus fish and I had about a dozen good shots on the fly…ended up having 7 fish eat and landed 5. Second day we also raised about 20 fish and had 9 fish eat but only landed 3. Also; landed two football Yellowfins and two Dolphin. The fishery there is amazing and boats trolling Ballyhoo were releasing 20 to 30 fish a day. According to the locals a real good day is 40 plus releases. I had heard all this but had to see it to believe it. It’s the real deal down in Guatemala. I plan to put together another trip for next year. It was the start of the season and next time I will go a bit later to be in the thick of it. We had one fly rod rigged for Marlin but never did get a shot. Maybe next time…I guess I just added to the bucket list.
Largest fish landed was 100lbs plus. Most fish released in 5 minutes or less.
I’ll take an average two days like that anytime. Total of 8 Sailfish released on the fly. Two Yellowfins/two Dolphin…released to the kitchen.
We spent the rest of the week checking out a truly beautiful country.
