40hp Yamaha 4 Stroke Starting

My 40hp Yamaha 4 stroke is taking a while to spark after turning the key. The motor turns over and the boat runs fine when it finally does start, but it takes 4 or 5 times to get going. Replaced the plugs but still having the issue. I figured bad fuel would be an issue starting or running. Any ideas?

Mystery deepens. Fired it off 6 or 7 times in a row in the driveway, fired it up in the lot at the boat ramp, fired it up while putting it in. It ran fine. Cut it off at the inlets and it would not restart. Waited 10 minutes and it fired right up. Left it running all afternoon. Got it on the trailer and tried to fire it up again, but it would not go. Got it back to the house and it would not fire. Once again it runs fine once it starts…

I hope you’re not giving it any gas when trying to start it.Mine won’t start if the throttle is turned any at all.Did you set the gap on your new plugs with a feeler gauge? Also don’t try to start it unless you’re in the water or have a hose hooked to the intake on the foot. You will develop water pump problems. You might check the kill switch.Pull one of the plugs, hook it back up to the plug wire and see if you have a spark at the gap. This will tell you if you have a fuel or a fire problem.

my guess would be dirty idle circuits in the carbs, but that’s just a guess based on the limited info.
