4blade vs 3 blade

what’s the pros and cons? Buddy wants to change the prop on his 90hp yamaha from a 3 to a 4. Not sure about the year of the boat but it is a 17 or 18ft Alison cc with a 04 90hp 4 stroke.

Generally a 4 blade will have less speed (1-3 mph). However, a 4 blade will pull better and you can trim it up higher and hold better in turns. With that size boat I would stick with a 3 blade unless you are specifically looking for trimming up higher and holeshot.

four blades generally give better hole shot. They are more efficient with heavy boats and in the mid rpm range. From the description of the boat, I’d stay with a three blade unless you’re trying “pop” it on plane

Yeah, I’d stick with a 3-blade for that boat/motor combo also.

Thanks guy’s, that is pretty much what I told him. Don’t mess with a good thang.

4 blade will handle a lot better around the dock too

Anyone tried one of these?

The 88spl on my Henry O just barely makes it to 4800 rpms when wide open. I think the book says it should turn 4800-5600 wide open. So, I think I nearly over propped. My current prop is original and has been ‘cleaned-up’ more than once with the metal file. I wouldn’t mind replacing it. The link above goes to a carbon fiber prop with adjustable pitch. The diameter would be just slightly smaller than what I have now. Which, for the same pitch would loosen her up a little. But, I have a 3 blade now, and the pro-pulse is a 4 blade which would slow her back down. But, the adjustable pitch might allow me to dial in something like 5000 rpms wide open getting the motor a little further into her power range.

Ideas? Opinions? Anyone ever had one of these carbon fiber adjustable critters? They are cheaper than aluminum and advertised as tougher. Plus, the blades are replaceable.

That COULD have negative effects to the performance of that prop. Do your self a favor and take your prop to Skips or a prop shop.

Understood. The filing has generally been deburring. I have taken measures to maintain symmetry and balance. But, I’m sure it has had negative effects. Ergo, my interest in a new prop.

Any thoughts/opinions on the pro-pulse product?

“On the 2007 record attempt, Earthrace tried to gain a tactical advantage with the use of carbon fiber props. Eighteen hours into the first leg, the high-tech propellers simply came to bits, leaving Earthrace limping toward Panama and causing the team to seek an instant donation of new propellers”
