OK, here goes my fishing report for Tuesday.
First, it was a little bumpy going out in my Bay boat to the reef from Cherry Point. I am kinda new to all this offshore fishing stuff, I am mostly an inland striper fishing guy and have done my share of catching the ole line sides. Must say I and my crew of two, uh well one, because one never recovered from the ride out, not really sick but woosey. Anyway we were looking to hook into a cobia or AJ but more on that later. First, we slayed, I mean slayed the endangered BSB, of course had to go through about 60 before we kept our limit of 15 for the boat, beautiful 15 plus inchers. Figured out we didn’t need bait, just tied on big 3 oz. white jigs and started catching the big ones because the big 8/0 hooks weeded out the smaller ones. While fishing with jigs we had some surprise (to me anyway) hook ups with some big stuff, I mean some line screamers, probably AJ, we turned a few but the twenty pound braid just didn’t hold up. OK , now its time to break out the big Battle Reel with the 50 pound stuff. AJs now coming to the boat, only to be thanked for the fight and released. Later we moved to a different section and got on the spades, brought a few to the boat and thanked them too, they were a challenge because they were hesitant to take our little free lined shrimp offerings. Highlight of the day was not what we caught but what two guys in a Sea Hunt near us were doing while we were harassing the spades. They were slaying the Cobia, they had three on one time and it was only two of them in the boat, it is nice to see guys who know what there are doing. I saw them keep their limit and let the others go. I tried to get a cobia throwing a big HOGY, but I guess I just wasn’t holding my mouth right. Sure wish I could have had a cobia steak to saute. All in all it was a great morning on the reef, except for our one “woosey” crew member.
Big turtles everywhere, bait covered the reef, big school of spades, with the Cobia lurking all around. Just before we left , a really b
