4KI and beyond 4/4/2009

Woke up this morning and it was cold. Left the dock about 7:30am in WWC’s 23 Sailfish. Running down the North Edisto and past 2NE we had the wind at our backs. Seas were calm and I knew it was going to be a good day since the forecast were for the seas to lay down.

Started at the 437 ft ship. Relatively easy anchor set. Immediately started to tear up the bsb on squid, cigar minnows…they were hungry. As a matter of fact so hungry WWC caught a bsb with one of my Walmart hot wings in his gut, which by the way are very tasty - you can get a dozen for $4.78. Caught a few nice sized ones. Caught all we could handle. All released.

Moved to the 300 ft barge in search of larger species. Continued to catch bsb thought smaller in size. No spades, bait very sporadic, no cobia, cudas or spanish. By this time it was 11:15 and the ocean was really getting slick. We had 2 options: Edisto 60 or Edisto Offshore reef. We chose the latter. The ocean was too flat to pass up.

Blasted out to the Edisto offshore reef at 37 MPH and arrived with a nice Pursuit on the 100 ft ship so we headed to try the deckhouse. The fishfinder was marking fish about 50 feet down and we tried to get anchored up on the deckhouse with no luck. With a potential fuel situation occuring and not wanting chance it WWC gave me a chance to drop a white 2 oz. bucktail down. On the 3rd drop BAM something was pulling hard. Turned out to be a nice redfish. Released the fish and decided to head home. Came back in on slick ocean. Thanks to WWC and his wife for a great day!

Thanks for the nice report!

What fish are those in the second photo?

Aha! Horizontal tail should have told me. WAY too long since I’ve been in the open ocean. Glad you had a nice ride. That ocean was SMOOOOTH.

Kinda stinks to make that long trip and not fish it from 4ki to edisto. I felt same way going to Y73 in the slop and made a 20 mile trip sw to 75’ b/c seas were slop at Y73 and I couldn’t find the good fish
