Seriously, let get some participation, so they power boaters don;t look at me like a fool when I propose more per angler fishing tournaments. Plus, if enough of us make a showing, perhaps we can sell them on the CPR tournament format, instead of the catch and kill, in the future.
Fortunately, only a few slot reds, some seatrout and flounder will die in this tourney. But unless they power boaters become informed about the CPR method us kayak anglers use in tourneys, they will continue the slaughter… It is up to us to enter in large enough numbers for them to not only take us seriously, but to also take our ideas seriously.
Rally to the cause fella’s and let’s have a good time and out fish the stinkpotters!
I agree completely on not killing except to eat, and generally not for a fishing tournament.
That being said, the powerboaters do not understand this concept, and the battle to do so is a uphill one… Considering the number of powerboaters fishing tournaments every year versus kayak anglers fishing CPR tourneys, if we can get even one or two of the bigger tourney’s in the area converted, imagine how many fish will be saved.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!
Come on now YOF, I know a bunch of these guys that arrange the PUOSU tourny, and most are pretty strick Catch and release. This tourny is and always has been a total weight tourny, and believe me, none of the fish have gone to waste! In fact, this year they will all be sacrificed at the James Island County park on sunday!
I’ll be fishing it…
…From a stinkpot!!!
Should be a fun time though, I’ve been pushing for a kayak side lately too.
Hate that I’m going to miss it. Would sure like to go up against the power boats on this one, but will be fishing the HardCore Invitational Kayak Tournament. Maybe next year.

TRAITOR!
Come on, use the yak… You know you want too!
As for most of them being Catch and Release guys… Awesome.
Are they even aware of the Catch, Photo and release concept? Or should we enlightne them, and try to convince them that future tourneys, especially for Redfish (Due to such narrow slot limits, causing people to fill top slot fish with bait to cheat and win), should be the CPR format.
Guys I just wanted to say that last year I think we weighed in 4 or 5 reds, a few trout and a couple of flounder, so there is not a wholesale slaughter of fish going on just for this tournament. Most guys know it will take a mid 20’s trout, a 4lb or better flounder and I’m amazed how hard it is to catch an upper slot red on tournament day. Besides, this is a tournament for the average guy and some of those wouldn’t be able to fish it if you required a release well on board. I am going to encourage using that release well if you have it and with the weigh-in on Shem Creek, I think we will probably have some takers. I don’t know what CPR is so maybe someone could explain it to me. Anyway, hope we can get you to come out and have a great time with the rest of us “power guys.”

CPR- Catch Photo Release.
In order to keep everyone honest a token is given to everyone before the start of the tournament that must be in each picture. Most tournaments require you to take a picture of yourself and kayak with the token as the first picture on the camera. Some tournament even issue the measuring device with the token. If the picture does not have the token then it does not count. There has been more than one event lost because someone forgot to put the token in their picture.

Thanks for the well thought out and respectful reply. I was not trying to come across as banning Catch and Filet, as I enjoy a good piece of fresh fish every once and a while.
Glad to hear the numbers killed out are so small. However, with the CPR method I mentioned, and that S1tPilot explained, those who want to fish and try to win a tourney, yet do not really want to keep the fish for tablefare, can do so, releasing the fish to fight another day, and more importantly hopefully spawn more of the fish. Even a handful of fish a year could make a huge difference down the road.
Additionally, the CPR method would allow Over Slot Reds to be entered, and as you know, with the large number of 36" plus fish, this could be an incentive to get more people involved in these tourneys, especially those who have no problem catching large reds, but have difficulty catching slot on
Yeah, there’s nothing quite as thrilling as coming into the weigh-in after a great day of fishing and crowding around someone’s laptop in the glaring sun squinting at digital photographs to see who won. I say we go CPR too…
I’m gonna have to go against ya’ll on this one (cept flatcaster). I like to brag, show my fish, and if I get beat out- I wanna see the fish. There is always someone besides me that will eat those fish.
Sometimes I think we go overboard with the tree-hugging/ save the fish theme.
disclaimer: Mudroc and I caught a bunch of good eating fish last weekend and we released all to “fight another day”!
just wondering…how many of the kayak tournaments are open to power boats?
Mud
That would be NONE… Of course, how many Kayak tournaments are there each year in South Carolina?
How many people show up to the ones that do exist?
Hint: Last fall, I had TEN people for the BARF tourney, and THREE of them just contributed but did not actually fish.
Heck, getting people to leave Charleston to fish down here is like pulling teeth… Except you, Cutmullet, Beerbelly, Townsend and Krooz, no one has made the trip… Of the above, Krooz once, Townsend not for three years…
I have made several trips to the Charleston area to fish in the same period, and entered the only Tournament for Kayakers up there in that time.
That is why I am supporting a per rod tourney that include powerboat and kayak anglers equally.
