After carefully poring over SST and forecast maps we came up with a solid plan to target Mahi/Tuna/Wahoo. Left out of Shem Creek just before 5:00am Tuesday after double checking all the systems and details. The ride out to the ledge was a bit bumpy for the first 20 miles but really laid down at 90 ft of water. We opened up the Yammys and got to 200 ft of water right at sunrise. There was bait busting everywhere in 68 degree water, fully expected to snag a few BFTs when we set the trap. After 30 minutes and no bites we decided to run for deeper warmer waters. Boy was that a good call. We ran to 1400 ft and after hunting for an hour found a fishy looking rip/weed line in 71 degree water. We got the lines out and it was on! The next 2 hours was absolute mayhem, it was all we could do to keep lines in the water. Doubles and triples with several nice gaffers in the mix. We had a few pop off and a few more break lines, but otherwise a well executed attack. The last fish brought a school of 50+ hungry Mahi right up to the stern. We managed to pull 4-5 slingers in to finish off the day with 2 boxes full of fish before we ran out of bait. Had a bit of a scare as we began the trip back home… The intake got clogged up with weeds on the port engine and it overheated, causing both motors to shut down. Fortunately it was an easy fix. The ride back in was the smoothest I have had in ages. Ended up with 20 dolphin and some great memories.
