This would be the first troll trip of the year on my 23’ Mako and the long run North was call for a last chance Tuna/Wahoo bite before Dolphin consume the mind. We arrived early. The bite has been good North but there wasn’t much bait or signs of life in the 73 degree water. Had some sporadic bites and caught 5 blackfins in the first 2 hours. Had a good wahoo bit but it came unglued on a new plug after a 30 yd run. We trolled our way back down the ledge towards charleston with Very slow radio talk and not much life. Last chance of the day had a really good wahoo bite and it too somehow grab the lure in a hard run and missed the hooks. This happens rarely and always hurts when it does happen. Caught a small mahi somewhere along the troll as well. We were happy with the tuna but had hoped for a better bite knowing the mahi bite was probably on.

We headed towards 600’ and stopped short as the break had moved inshore overnight. We found good weedlines in 300’ in 68-70 water and fished them all day. We saw several large turtles, 10 or so big Mola MOla dinosaurs, several large sharks cruising the surfaces, and far too many balloons…Which we ALWAYS go out of the way to gaff and bring home. It is also always sad to see freshly drunk floating bud light cans from another tard that “thinks” bud light cans make a reef at the bottom.
Anyhow we ended the day with 21 mahi. Mostly teen size fished with a few nice 25-30 lb bulls that we caught first thing. Radio talk was scattered of few fish or many. Amazing flat ocean and always beats a day on land! Get out there.
Fun but tiring 2 days, 360 Nautical Miles, and little sleep in a 23’
