5-1 Report

We started the day at 5:00 a.m. after picking up a few guys. We headed out on a very smooth ocean. We ran at 32 mpg but could have gone a lot faster but I was conserving fuel. About 8 miles shy of the 226 the water was 72.5 and the depth was around 320. Started putting out the spread but before we were finished fish on. We got him in the boat and back to work on the spread. Put the full spread out and another fish on. We stayed in the 350ish 72.5 degree water all day. Fishing was steady. Lost a couple big one (the one you see in the water was a big boy but we lost him at the boat. We got into a pod of about 100 dolphins jumping and splashing. We headed in around 1:30 so a very wet ride home. It was not terribly rough just wet. We ended the day with 9 mahi. Lost about 4 others and had a couple of mystery knockdowns that threatened to relieve us of a spool but they got off.

Hope to get out there soon again hit me up if you are interested in an invite.

Thanks for the report. Cool pix. I never get tired of seeing the color of the Phins coming up!

Insert Funny Line Here

Are you guys running hi-vis line directly to your lure or is that just a funny angle coming from the sun that is lighting your leader up like that?

He hit my planer so you see the line is tied to the swivel with one of them shock knots with the douple line adn then there is a 18" wire leader tied to an islander. Its my wahoo rig no clue why a mahi hit it I have only ever got King’s, Wahoos and Cudas on it before. It was a big one though!

We caught several very large dolphin on the planer rod last year. Try running some 100# fluoro or just reg clear mono for a leader from your planer to your wire and see if you have an increase in hook-up percentage. Use the hi-vis stuff to locate your trolling lines but try to keep most of it out of the water. Just speaking from personal experience and I don’t want to come off the wrong way but I bet you see some improved results. If not, you can come back on here and call me names, haha. Nice haul! Keep at it.

Thats a good idea. I run that set up where you use the double swivel and a rubberband to get the line down. But I could easily make it so the wire connects to mono then to my line on the rod. It would be just like the rest of my rigs at that point. I am gonna give it a try thanks!

I use pretty much the same setup but found out the 130#spro will break 100#mono so went to 130# and no problems heres a couple pics of what i use for wahoo

And a closeup of the connection between mono and wire

those work great. might want to rig an inline planer with a bridle to 60’ of 150lb mono with a 150lb snap swivel. add whatever length of wire you want and you can clip new rigs to the snap swivel. you don’t have to leader the fish with 30’ or more dancing around your legs. more fun, less dangerous, and rather effective. the guys at Atlantic Game and Tackle can get you setup for not much $$$ with a sniper rig.
