5/2-3 and 5/4 SC Memorial Reef!(Check the video!)

5/2-3=Over night charter from yesterday and today. Fished from 545pm til dark yesterday(5/2) bottom fished last night and fished until 830 this morning(5/3), about 4 1/2 hours worth of trolling all together. 15 blackfins 10 dolphin and a few bottom critters! Fun time and a great group of guys!
5/4= Had a fun day with the boss! Got to ride out and watch the Memorial Reef sink. Boss wanted to go looking for a blue marlin afterwards. Managed to get a bite out of one and jumped him off right behind the boat, caught a few dolphins to go along with! more pics @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/South-Carolina-Memorial-Reef/119852698065192https://

awesome video…but what about the wreck breaking apart and going down sideways?? I know a ton of $ and time was spent engineering it to sink with the vertical structure standing towards surface. Do they anticipate it to remain intact or work as predicted with it going down different than planned? I will gladly go check it out if anyone has a spare submarine!!

Awesome!!!

Did anyone get a shot on the sounder?

The video is not of the best quality I apologize but I was a little more worried about driving the boat. There were plenty of hd video cameras going that have much better footage, I just have not gotten a hold of it yet. As I was told, that was how the engineers planned for it to sink aside from the couple layers of containers coming loose. Yes you could mark it on the sounder once the wash cleared up.

When you marked it on the sounder, how far did it rise up off the bottom?

That is the all important question. I hope it didnt tip over, then the height would be equal only to the width of the barge, bummer.

At least it will still be home to snowies and warsaws in a protected area. While it majorly sucks to have government shut down an existing live bottom, I fully support creating new MPA’s from scratch and developing them in this fashion to operate as new fish havens. Can’t wait to see video on this spot in the next 5-10 years.

Thanks for your support Skineee. Thats the whole reason we started this project. Hopefully it will keep the other MPA open to fishing!!! I heard from Bob Martore and Stevens today that they are going to try and sink barge 2 Wednesday or Thursday!!!

Little Charlie said you guys marked it after the wash cleaned up. How high did it come up? I marked it all the way to the bottom but could not get an exact height because there was still some wash.

Perhaps I missed something. How deep was this? We don’t need a new MPA, do we?

Thanks,

This MPA is going to keep the Fed’s from closing alot more area’s.

The area where it sits was already designated for an MPA. The second barge will be put on the bottom, we hope this week.

We went over it but there was still so much wash, couldn’t get a great picture. We hooked a dolphin as soon as we went over and I went back in cockpit.

Got a friend starting up offshore, where are the DNR #'s at? Are they adding to them a lot?
