A group of us went out to some wrecks earlier this week. Once we jumped in, we were visited by a numorous amount of Spadefish feeding on the jellyfish. The water clarity was also insane! You could see both wrecks from the surface.
After everyone made some drops to the wreck, we noticed that the visability and lack of marine life was less than acceptable. But that didnt stop a number of Amber Jack, Spades, a friendly sea turtle, Cobia, African Pompano and a curious sandbar shark from visiting.
These fish mainly congregated in the middle and upper water column. However, to give himself more of a challenge, Charles made multiple drops to the wreck to shoot these same fish. Charles also was the first to introduce himself to the Sandbar Shark who seemed to want nothing to do with us. Personally, I think we are a bunch of rad dudes and that shark was just insulting.
Even though there was so much marine life that kept most of us in awe, it didnt stop Michael too long. Just after entering the water, Michael made a drop through some AJ’s to collect on a nice size Cobia. When Michael surfaced from the depths, he shouted to who ever was around. I think most of us were still in a trance like state due the vast amount of activity in the ocean.
After a little bit of trolling we decided to head in. At around 7pm we decided to jump in the water again in hopes of scoring some more Cobia. The water was dark and it was hard to see. This, of course, didnt stop Michael. The man is a Cobia magnet! Right when we gets in,
Freediving to those depths. That’s a true sport there. Good goin’ on you guys! You got some serious gonads to spear a cobia free diving! Beautiful underwater pictures. What type of camera are you using?

What is the deepest depth you hit on that kind of trip? And what is the average depth that you frequent on a dive like that? How long are you holding your breath?
The camera I use is an older and discontinued Nikon D40 DSLR in a monster Ikelite camera housing. If I could upgrade, I would go with the sea&sea housing and Nikon D3100. That is, if I wanted to stick with Nikon’s line of entry level cameras. I also have to use a bit of Photoshop to get rid of all the particles, add lighting/contrast and attempt to recreate color which Im no good at (colorblind).
The depths we go really depend on where the fish are. I dont think any of us went much beyond 70ft and that was only to scout the outside of the wreck.
I certainly can’t hold my breath long enough to get into the freediving, but that’s what scuba is for.
Haven’t been diving since last year, but these pics have me itching to get back out there. I’d love to run into someone on the boat one of these days with a decent camera to get some good quality underwater shots of myself. The P&S cams don’t do such a great job, and I don’t think I could stomach taking my DSLR underwater (or afford the housing, for that matter).
