Took the Boss’ out for a little bit of trolling, deep dropping, topwater and jigging. Ended the day with a half dozen mauis, our boat snowy, a dozen rosies, three scamps and too many miserable ass AJs to count. Had a hammer head and tiger destroy about $150 in deep drop gear over the course of 20 minutes. Favorite part of the day was a Manta Ray 10ft from tip to tip swimming two or three laps around the boat before moving on. I have been fascinated by those creatures since I was a kid.
It is tough fishing the GTH on a weekend in the Spring. The fishing pressure is comparable to about any day I’ve ever fished in the Keys. I’ve seen the debate about the fish not being here or not being here in numbers, but after 5pm when the 18,000 center consoles go home, that place immediately comes to life. I’ve watched this happen every year for the last 10 years. Think outside the box (there are many different ways to catch fish), study the water, don’t be afraid to run, if you can get one dolphin excited enough to eat, the rest will usually follow (i.e. teasers), and think about scaling back on your tackle.
On a more serious note, how do we convince the Asian market that AJ’s have supernatural healing powers? That species needs to be eradicated from the planet.
