Got lines in on time Saturday for the LCO after running 40 out. Mojo and all her systems are running better than ever it seems.
Started above the hole and found scattered, smothered and covered stuff as we worked south. Rips everywhere in between nasty green water, and weed patches not formed up good enough in between.
Two small blackfin snagged immediately and then a micro bonita that should have gone back out as bait. Picked up a big cow dolphin and switched to dredging and a close spread as soon as we got her boxed. Had 2 more knockdowns in the same spot before 9 but only one more dolphin to the boat. Fish were showing 200ft down and hanging under scattered grass.
Picked at the weed patches and got a couple more dolphin and tuna, and then checked the planer once again to find it untouched. Next thing you know, it was 10:45 and the radio chatter reporting the same as us- bite dead.
We ran out and got a snowy and other deep dwellers and then came back in to set the wahoo trap since we had the 3 dolphin and 3 tuna for the LCO already and doubtful we would get more bank for our buck than if we just got a single wahoo to weigh.
Got side tracked on the way, though- witnessed a giant AJ wad on some deep bottom and decided to catch 3 of them for the nearshore aggregate in the tournament also rather than coming in shallow on the way in for whatever kings and AJ’s we could get on lures.
Spent an hour breaking AJ’s off on lighter tackle in 400ft but got 3 in the boat for 123lbs at the scales. Wish I had our grouper rods on the boat so the aforementioned process would have taken merely 10 mins!
Did get to try the wahoo for a bit next but had to pull them in after only a hot bronze fin bite on the planer rather than what we hoped was at least a weehoo to weigh in. Called it, and then made 40mph again until the last 15 miles back into Winyah Bay.
I think we ended with 4-5 tuna, 4 dolphin, some tasty deep dwellers, 80lbs of worms and 43lbs of AJ. Got into some big fish money with one of the do
