We left out of Folly around 2pm on Saturday and headed for the banks. We took our time getting out there averaging around 25mph to conserve fuel and to lessen the beating the waves were giving us in my little 20’ cuddy cabin. We trolled around for a couple hours, but didn’t get the first strike.
About 8:30 we headed for some structure and began our bottom fishing. We caught a load of nice sized Vermillion Snappers and some BSB’s. After a while, a couple bull dolphin began circling the boat, and after a few stolen baits, I ended up landing a really nice one on a ballyhoo freelined on my Penn 850. That was a awesome experience.
I bedded down around 1 am for a nap, and a couple guys stayed up fishing. I guess we drifted off the reef, and the guys didn’t feel like moving, so they decided it was easier to catch a buzz instead.
I got up shortly before sunrise, and we headed out for some trolling. We found a spot where the fish seemed to be holding, and we landed 3 nice mahi’s and then we landed an awesome hoo!! When I gaffed that SOB, I thought I was going in with it!!
Overall, we didn’t slay the fish, but we filled the 6’ fish bag, and had to put a bunch of the fish into the 120 qt cooler. We had some smooth seas, and beautiful sunset and sunrise, and some good company. It is an experience that I will not soon forget!!
I’ll add pictures of the wahoo and this one wierd looking snapper?? fish that we caught later. Maybe someone can help us figure out what it was.
Potential… You really think so?
Sweet, then I guess I should keep it up:wink:
Just kidding 7cs… Thanks!
We all had a blast except the one that got sick and spent the night in the cabin. It was fine by the rest of us, because he did a great job steering the boat on Sunday while we worked the lines.
Glad you guys made it back in safely. I have to admit, I was a worried about you guys spending the night out there. Try to hail you on the radio yesterday to see if you needed anything and how things were going, but maybe you had already headed in by that time. Nice fish, that’s a stud wahoo.

Thanks. I tried to hail you a time or two also. We headed back to the hill around 10:00 though. I thought I heard my name a couple times, but I wasn’t sure what channel it was on with the scanner going. I should change it to 5 sec delay instead of 3.

Nice Boat. I have a 99 with a 2007 F150. How much fuel did you end up burning?
We burned just under 49 gallons for the whole trip.
We were averaging around 3-4 mpg the whole way.
Trolling was about 1 gph.
Gotta love those fuel sippin' 4 strokes!!
