Don’t be afraid to change it up…
BOSN and I went out after work. At our first spot, a tide swept bank, we found a nice eddy where the current broke away from a point. BOSN was throwing a suspending lure and I chose a trout trick to see if one was preferred over the other.
Our first pass we each caught a trout. But on our second pass I cast into the rip and landed a hard fighting 25" red. We made a second pass after tagging it, and I yanked another out. BOSN casting in the same spots was empty handed at that point. He changed up to the TT and we pulled 10 reds out of that spot on them! What a blast.
Next example
Sundown, time for topwater. I threw my trusty skitterwalk and BOSN threw a bone spook jr. In the month of May that bone spook has been out fishing the skitter for some reason. I had a few half hearted swipes and a bluefish while BOSN tried the suspending lure. Then he brought out the spook and had 2 fish in 3 casts and the third cast had a blowup. My turn to change it up. Tied on the same lure and we bailed topwater fish for the next hour.
Moral: Don’t be afraid to experiment; it can turn a so-so day into a great day
Totals: 10 reds (tagged and released), 10 trout (most released, kept a few for dinner), 5 bluefish
19" Topwater Trout, full of roe, released
