5/6 African Pompano! Say whaaaaaaaaaaa?

I consider myself an extremely fortunate individual. It’s not everyday you can whitness a pod of Spotted Dolphins or be in the middle of 20-30 Spinner Sharks with some good friends. Or how about gliding down to 70ft while a school of African Pompano linger just beyond reach in the distance?

We were running a little late than expected due to Gabes last minute flat tire. But it was no problem. I picked him up and we headed for the dock. Once we arrived, Charles was recuperating from a brutal run in with Johnny Walker and Keith Stone. Of course, Charles probably planned it all out just to add another pinch of challenge to his adventure.

Now a lot of stuff happened that day and to save my hands from premature carpal tunnel syndrome, Im gonna try to skip the story and get straight to the detail…

At our secret honey hole in the Atlantic, we noticed the ocean was different. The place that teamed with life last time now had twice as much. The same characters were there. The Amber Jacks, ol nasty head the turtle, the sandbar shark, the spades and etc. But today there was a school of African Pompano. I was able to dive down to a considerable depth and line up a shot on one of seven fish I saw that day. Once I got the fish back to the boat I had asked Charles what African Pompano tasted like. This, like many other fish, was my first time ever seeing or having the opportunity to taste its flesh. Like all the other fish I asked about before, Charles responded once again with, “Dude, its like butter”! I have dove with Charles quite a few times now and I had started to wonder what his obsession was with butter.

On our laast adventure, it seemed Charles was infatuated with sharks. So between dive trips I spent all my off time in some deep meditation and I even gave a small offering to Posiedon. This must have done some good since we all got more than what we bargained for. While looking for a trolling spot out in the 300ft mark or so, I no

I have seen a lot of cool posts here on CF but, this was an awesome post!

I wish i had gotten a shot on that big scooty of a wahoo that pestered me just out of range for 10 minutes. Next time, we are due for a wahoo with the gun. Right?

I dont train much if Im diving two to three times a week. Otherwise I train daily if I have the time.

Very nice man. I’ve got to start doing more free diving (and working less). Hope to get to dive with you again soon.

Ya’ll got some major brass ones to just pile off a perfectly safe boat to swim with those critters.
Thankx for posting.

Really enjoy the pics. Charles was kind enough to break me off a piece of that fish. Excellent!

WOW…incredible. I wish I had the stones to do that. When I jump in the deep blue offshore I can only stay in for about half of a second before I freak out and imagine the entire ocean trying to eat me. Ya’ll see things not many see that’s for sure. Nice trip!

Awesome!!
