Does anyone in the Lexington/Columbia have a 5" hole saw I could borrow for a couple of days? I’m putting speakers in my boat & didn’t want to spend $45.00 for something I’ll probably only use once(well really twice since I’m mounting two speakers).
Thanks, Bob

Thanks Doug. I’ll keep you in mind. Would that work on thin aluminum? I’ve got a small pneumatic reciprocating saw and a jig saw, but I think a hole saw would be better(and easier) considering the material & location I’m putting the speakers.

I have one. There is a harbor freight hole saw kit that has a 5" one in it, about $15-18 I think. I bought it just for the 5" one to put a couple speakers in. I’m in N. Augusta. You’re welcome to it if you want it.
A fine fine tooth. I have used 4"+ hole saws a good bit and they always seem to cut a very rough hole. On something larger than 2-3" I usually cut a couple small holes inside as relief cuts and then take a small fine jig or weak sawzall to trim it up to measurements. Clean it up with a good rounded file. Not the fastest, but it gives a very good result.
I’m not too concerned about the rough edges. There’s enough room that I can use my little pneumatic sander to smooth it out. I also have a small pneumatic reciprocating saw I’d thought about using, but the aluminum is pretty thin and I think it will vibrate too much to get a decent cut. A hole saw will be better.
andyb, I didn’t even think about checking Harbor Freight. I was going to take you up on your offer, but it’ll be cheaper for me to go to HF than drive to N. Augusta and back. Thanks any way, I appreciate it. And Doug, thanks again for your offer.

No problem Bob. I figured by the time we met up or mailed it back and forth you’d be into it for more than just buying the $15 set. It’s standard HF quality but gets it done for 2 holes just fine.
I went out & got the set from HF this afternoon, $16.04 after tax. I know the quality of HF tools, but for what I have to do, it’ll work.
Although, I have a couple of HF air tools that have lasted for more than a couple of yrs. The boss must have been watching when they put them together.
Thanks again guys!

I have a HF Chicago elec. 4-1/2" angle grinder that has been run through the ringer, abused and over used and is still going strong after 16 years!! Its hit or miss with the quality you get… On the other hand, I bought a inexpensive drill bit kit from HF and they were all bend fresh out the package… Still love that place!!
A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.
Run the 5" holesaw backwards at high speed on thin metal to give a cleaner cut.
Don’t put pressure on it. Let the motion of the saw do the work…
I do the same thing with gelcoat in a boat to avoid chipping it initially; then, I switch to fwd gear once to the laminate and glass/core.
With thin aluminum, you can go all the way through with the saw in reverse set on high speed. Just don’t force it and keep it level.
If you put pressure on it, it will get too hot and melt the metal too fast and cause the saw to bog up. Keep water nearby to keep your saw cool. You’re basically grinding rather than cutting when you do it this way- if that makes sense. If you do good enough keeping your saw even, then it will go thru clean or either get almost all of the circle, at which time, you can knock it out with a hammer or by bending it back and forth and popping it like a soda can’s top.
Thanks for that tip, Phin. I do the reverse thing whenever I’m cutting or drilling into gelcoat, but never thought about it on thin alum. I’ll give it a shot.(if it stops raining long enough for me to get out there and do it)
Bowhunter, I didn’t have my phone with me when you called. Sorry I missed you. I’ll give you a shout tomorrow(Tuesday).
PS: I still have my receipt for the hole saws.
