50 dolphin 5-28; my 6yr olds 1st 5-31video&pics

Rolled outta Dewees Monday around 5:20 and had a slow ride out due to the head seas. Lines in at SWBanks by 8 after the hot Aunt Jemimas. Picked up a couple but wasn’t looking too fishy. Decided to troll offshore and south looking for the break. Within an hour found a pretty good weedline and put 24 in the box and released about 10 by 11:15. Sea fix found the line and came in behind us and released a big Blue-congrats! Chad Plott pulled out the fresh cilantro, purple onion, tomatoes and limes and whipped up some fresh mahi cevice. Jeremy broke out the blender and we washed down the apps with some cool frozen margaritas. Pulled offshore and south and trolled to the deep pulling some big lures but never found a stickfish. Came upon a floating cooler and pulled out the spinning gear. Kevin Manwaring and crew caught 11 more, broke off about 15 and released a few more. Chad went back down to the gourmet galley and prepared some pipin’ hot cashew encrusted mahi with a mango chutney! Headed to the ledge and Mr. Wahoo screamed across the spread and cut us off. After one more dolphin and another wahoo cut off, Andy Nelms grilled six filet mignons that he had marinated all day. I broke out a bottle of Dynamite Cab and a bottle of Sterling merlot as we toasted to a great day. Rolled home at 32 knots.
Thursday, I finally took my 6 yr.-old little boy, James, offshore trolling. Chad Plott, his friend, Chris, and Nick Strable joined me and Jeremy around 6 am at the dock. Rolled out at 30 knots and put lines in by 7:45. Picked up Nick Strable’s first fish ever(he had never even caught a bream!) - a 30 pound bull. Trolled a little offshore and my 6 year old caught his first offshore fish on a 50! Ran to 300 feet and picked up a couple- then trolled to the deep to find an edge. Went past the 380 hole and found a line forming up. Caught a bunch and chummed them up. Broke out the spinning gear and James caught about 4 more. Ended up throwing back about 10 -15 peanuts and kept a total of 17 from peanuts to 30 pounds. We had no bill

Awesome report, Mel. We will have to meet in person one day. Stop by my house next time you are on the island. I’m guessing you’ve noticed the boat in front as you’ve driven by…

Personally, I liked the Dynamite wines better before Beringer bought Carmenet back in '02.

Nice work on the dolphin.

Mel,
You ought to know not to interrupt the chef in the middle of preparing the meal…you may get some fish blood on the cilantro and chopped tomatoes. Coming down next weekend–Chad graciously accepted my invitation to help fix my boat with me. If you are going to be around, let’s plan on getting together.

Mel, thanks again for another great trip on Monday.
Food and fishing was great as usual. Let James know i
watched his video and that is AWESOME. I know that made
your year as far as fishing goes to witness your son in a
tweetie bird life jacket bag his first dolphin, I am sure
it doesn’t get better than that. Thanks again, look forward
to next time! I’ll come up with a new recipe for dinner!

Much appreciated and congrats, A.N.

Awsome pics and video. You need to get your young one an Avet. Small frame big guts! He worked that 50 pretty good though. I can’t wait till my little one is old enough to go out with us.

Where did you get your a-fish-a-knot-o live-well lid? I need one similar for my bote.

Mel, that’s great. Nothing better than take your kids and watching them smile from ear to ear when they pull one in. That’s great fun. My favorite trip was when it was just me and my 11 year old and we pulled off some doubles and a triple together. Keep at it, he’ll be your best mate…

Not quite a full deck.

Mel,

Fantastic report about you and your son. Congrats from the upstate. AWESOME video on youtube too.

Very cool… I’ve still got a ways to go before my 3-1/2 year old daughter is ready to go out on the CC with me, but I’m looking forward to it!

damm i want to fish with you guys… frozen drinks and good food…

James was born to fish! From the minute we left the dock, and for the next 12 hours, he absolutely amazed me. I can’t imagine any other 6 yr old spending the ENTIRE day offshore without one single complaint, and I’m positive there is not another who can handle a Tiagra 50 like he can. I’m sending my 3 yr old daughter to your house for fishing pre-school.
Thanks for another two great days of fantastic fishing, really good food, and a great crew.

Thanks everyone for your congrats and accolaydes. It is a special day I’ve looked forward to for 6 years. That is what fishing’s all about. Thanks to Chad, Chris, Nick and Jeremy for helping James and allowing him to be the center of attention all day. What awesome camaraderie we fishermen experience on this site and offshore. Glad to be a part of it.
Scoutin for Goodies- Dan, owner of Sign it Quick, did my lid. Mention my name when you call. He’s a fisherman, too. We used a piece of lexan or plexi and applied 3M vinyl to the underside of the lid. Make sure your plastic is the same thickness as your current lid. If your current lid is clear, you could probably use it.

That is fantastic! Great video, great pics, great report.

wow that’s a great video. My son and I just watched it and he keeps asking me to play it again. He has a few more years to wait for his first trip. Congrats on great day!

Congrats Mel !! Take the kid fishing and that is the best day of your life !! There are not many places you can go now adays with your kid and not have the TV, Game Boy, or Computer getting in the way !! Can’t wait to they become teens and then get to spend 12 hrs. with them as well. Congrats again and I know you will have a new fishing mate there with you shortly.

Congrats Mel. Boats keep catching the Blues all around you. Those 300’s must have the right hummmm or maybe they are eating left overs from the gourmet galley? And ■■■■ I’d love a marg out there. After about 12 beers they just don’t taste the same. Might have to jump ship next time we see you.

By the way, your 6 yr old worked that 50 better that any new crew member I have ever had on my boat. Last trip I looked back & one member(no names, we’ll save his pride) had a 50 VSW upside down like a spinning rod??? He figured it out after a ‘what the hell…’ & about 8 more dolphin & was slinging them in. One tough kid.
