50 Johnson throttle cables

I was wondering if anyone could help. My father-in-law brought me this boat, and asked if I could take a look at the engine. The guy who was working on the boat has the throttle cables out of wack, The question I have is does anyone know the proper adjustments on the throttle cables. Because the throttle moves about half way down before the engine speeds increase. If that is normal, than I will have to live with it. Thanks for any help.

This might be a tough question for us sir. Is the throttle “control box”, made for this motor?..Are the cables the right length for the boats application? Are the cables reversed, from shift to throttle?
What year motor and control box are you dealing with??

…Politicians aren’t the “Oldest Profession”, but the results are still the same!!!

That is the way it is with my 150 Rude with the OMC control box (you should have about the same control box for that Johnson). There is quite a bit of travel before throttle increases both in fwd and reverse. I don’t think it is necessarily SUPPOSED to be that way but with an older set up it usually happens that way. There is supposed to be a little play once you shift into gear so you can put it in gear without increasing throttle

its suppose to be that way
that movement, is the shifting
once you have shifted into gear(fwd or rev), you can then begin to apply throttle

this info is based on the single lever style shifter
if you have the old style with 2 handles, or the push button electric shifter, this doesnt apply

Good to know! That means my linkage isn’t “loose” after all
