They do not have good water flow now, with the work on the diversion canal dam. Very poor timing for the Striper spawn!
I believe Tiny Lund caught his 55 lber in Lake Marion in 1963 which stood as the state record for some time. I do know of one verifiable 50+ lber caught in the lower Saluda in the 90’s by Bill Casteen.
Look what I found! Ya’ll gon’a regret me finding out about how to post pics!
Found this one too!
From Lake RussellHartwell, 2009, Terry McConnell CURRENT STATE RECORD.
“total length of 49 1/2 inches and a girth of 34 inches.”
Note the Rainbow Trout belly! The ultimate purpose of a rainbow trout!
I stand corrected on the location… What a blast from the past pic!!

Terry McConnell’s “other” state record fish from 2002…dude has it dialed in! 59 lbs 8 oz
“I may be going to hell in a bucket. But at least I’m enjoying the ride”
I believe the Tiny Lund Fish was the freshwater world record for a good many years as well.
I hit enter too fast and could not figure out how to edit it.
I meant to add that Tiny Lund was quite a legend in and around the Lake Moultie area in the past…I never met the man but the old timers will tell you he was a great driver and fisherman but observing game laws was not one of his strong points. There was always a lot of speculation and doubt about whether the fish was caught on a rod and reel or trot line.
I am a little too young to have enjoyed Santee Cooper during that time and if it ever comes back to that glory I am afraid I will be too old.
Big Striper in any arena. Thanks Rasputen for posting that pic from the past.

30-40 years from now, tales will be told about today’s fishing legends and about how good the fishing was during the glory days of the early 21st century.
