50 pound fish

A good friend of mine caught and released 50 3/4" inch fish this weekend. According to 4 different length and girth calculations it put the fish between 48-53 pounds. I would show the fish off for him if I could figure out how to photoshop so I don’t spot burn his hole. Anyways I know where he caught it but was wondering what other waterbodies in SC are able to produce 50lb. class fish?? I know my home lake of wateree tops out around 20 pounds. what do you guys think?

Which lake did he catch it on?..I think 4 lakes in SC hold 50# fish and above. The 3 on the savannah and murray…I don’t think there are very many on murray but at least a few. Your best chance for a 50# is SC is on Russell with 2nd being A toss up between Hartwell and the hill…

So where did he get it at?..send me the pick through private message and I will edit it for you or just text it. 803 3o9 five3four2

Nope not Murray…you think Murray was the right water habitat?

Murraymaker everything I’ve read from you, you sound like a class act and I wouldn’t think twice about sending you the photo if it was mine, however I don’t want to burn any bridges with my buddy.

Funny thing is that he has spent big money going to the Delaware, chessey, and Montauk looking for that kinda fish and he lands one he his backyard.

If Murray is growing 30#+ fish it will grow 50’s…IF people put the big fish back…In the last 4 yrs the SBCC has been won 3x by a 30# class fish. In the last month 2 30# fish have been caught. 1 released.

Last Saturday 2 30# fish were hooked 1 won the TX (and still swimming) and one is still swimming with a stinger hook in its mouth after it broke off AT the boat. I think the Murray record is 56 or something like that…they are here but rare.

The taxidermist who did my fish had my 28 and 2 others in the 30’s ready to be picked up when I got mine. Just have to put that time in to get them and always pray every summer for no fish kills…

To my best recollection, the LM record is 46-10 caught by Don Eggleston.

Thanks fog. Figured someone knew for sure…knew there was 6 involved. Guess I jumped the gun…ha…I still believe there is a 50 somewhere in the lake…imagine Murray with a slot limit like savannah lakes of only keeping 2 fish per person over 26"…This lake would be booming with big fish in a 4-5yrs…

We were putting in at the dam one evening many years ago and a guy came in with what turned out to be a 42 lb’er… thinking it was back in the mid 80’s

I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I do remember he caught it in the late afternoon fishing down rods in the river channel down by Spence and it was the only fish they caught that day.

Gotta be from Lake Russell. Hartwell has been growing some good ones…Thurmond not so much. Wiley might produce a big one because it only gets a few stocked from escapement and thus no serious striped bass fishing attention. Coastal River estuaries during the winter will produce some monsters too…takes a different sort to get out in that nasty weather though. One other spot, but the fish are extra vulnerable to abuse so we just won’t mention it.

Rasputensc…There is one other body of water that I figure has a couple in it. But like u said the fish are very vulnerable and a lot of people don’t talk about it. …If we are talking about the same body of water I know of 2 fish that were over 40# that came bout of there last yr and many in the 30’s… but at the same tine DNR has made it tough on us hard core striper guys to get in there and target the BIG fish…

I’m not sure where you are talking about but I believe you guys are on the right track. Last clue I will give is no one coulda kept her come June 1. Now you know why I didn’t just say the Hill or Murray. It is nice to know that there is more options than I realized for a 40-60 pound fish in SC.
Also if it was my fish I would have been posting it all over every forum and magazine but my buddy is not like that so I apologize for jumping the gun on trying to get a picture of it up here because the striper fishery pretty special and some have put in lots of time and money to chase them. At any rate I do hope this thread will get people pumped about trophy striped bass.

Ok were gettin closer. In the following freshwater bodies: the Ashepoo River; Ashley River; Back River in Jasper County and the Back River in Berkeley County; Black River; Black Mingo Creek; Bull Creek and Little Bull Creek; Combahee River; Cooper River system; Coosawhatchie River; Cuckholds Creek; Edisto River; Horseshoe Creek; Lumber River; Lynches River; Great Pee Dee and Little Pee Dee Rivers; Pocotaligo River in Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton Counties; Salkehatchie and Little Salkehatchie Rivers; Sampit River; Santee River system except the lower reach of the Saluda River; Tulifinny River; Thoroughfare Creek; and Waccamaw River from June 1st to September 30th, it is unlawful to take, attempt to take, or to possess striped bass. Striped bass taken must be returned immediately to the waters from where it came.

I know exactly where she came from…ha…and its the body of water we haven’t mentioned and for good reason…lol…end of March through April there are some huge cows caught…Most are returned and hope they are continued to be released…and if a picture will give away a hole then he was in one of 3 or 4 places…

Congaree River!

I believe that the late NASCAR driver Tiny Lund at one time held the state record in the high 50’s with fish coming in the shadow of the Gervais Street Bridge. Someone correct me if I’m wrong… I used to fish the Congaree quite a bit, but got out of the habit. Never did I catch one over 20, but I literally got spooled a couple of times. With all the good water flow, it might be a good year to try it again:smiley:
