Look, the guy may be a jerk, but he does some good things…you gotta admit that. I just wish I could fish the tournament just for the sake of fishing,if nothing else.
BTW solo…the last time I was in NJ, a friend of my sister’s asked what I thought of all the Yankees coming down South…the exact words of a woman born and raised in Jersey…
“Never argue with an idiot…he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”
I forgot about Scoutin’, he’s an avid fisherman and tamie shooter. The debate ended this past January when you defended your stance on shooting pen raised ducks by stating you were introducing a friend to the sport. I can’t imagine how many kids are being fooled into thinking its an admirable hunting experience by fathers who don’t know the difference. Congratulations, good luck this weekend Tred.

I had the pleasure of fishing and spending a day or two with Tred a few years ago. He seems like a great guy and hard core fisherman. Not to mention all the good he does for kids.
plus he single handedly caught more big eye tuna that any human alive, on stand up gear, one handed, butt naked, using a bow and wooden arrow as a harpoon gaff while eating a bagel w/ cream cheese. now THATS something to be proud of.
Why do some people get so jealous of someone else’s accomplishments?
The guy is a successful hunter and fisherman. Success is a relative term, I know.
Like him or not, he is trying to do some good w/ kids. Ask yourself what you have done to help promote hunting or fishing w/ kids? I didn’t think so. I am just as guilty.
Don’t know if the warterspout photo is clear. We saw 4 at one time.
We caught 29 dolphin the second day but released some that were peanuts.
I can understand how Tred can rub some the wrong way, but I don’t understand the vitriol that some of ya’ll have. I think he is a lot like Bob Knight, and I guess some people can’t stand him either.
Tred said it best to me when I mentioned another well known outdoor writer and he said…“the difference between Tred Barta and %%%% is that Tred Barta KNOWS he is full of ^^*#@!”
The tournament is going to be a lot of fun. I guess some of you guys won’t be there. We’ll miss you.
Don, where did he run that Stripteaser? I just mounted a double pancake teaser reel (ain’t eBay great!) and am hoping to run it off the short rigger. I didn’t have any luck running it on the transom cleat, because the motors on my cat are so far apart (it stayed in the prop wash.)
I do agree that Barta has done a great deal to promote sportfishing to youth. However in this weekend’s tournamenthe expresses in the handout that he want every youth to be able to catch fish (be it gamefish or billfish),yet he doest allow skirted rigs and trolling birds to be used. I am not a professional captai but most of our fish come off skirted rigs and not naked baits. It seems if he wanted to catch more fish he would allow the use of these baits in the tournament.

Ryan,
We ran them off of the transom corners. Someone mentioned using a downrigger turned 90 degrees?

I felt the same way you do, but I will tell you that both in Beaufort and the last three days we have caught a lot of fish with naked baits. I have been surprised, and I think I might use a couple of them all of the time.

Thanks for sharing the experience Don Q that is really cool. I would love to fish with him one day. Like him or not I am sure you could learn a TON!

Those Avets sure look cool in the pics!
The camera guy, I think I would barf repeatedly if I spent all day looking through that thing.
Thanks for the pics post more if you have them!

Im not deniing that naked baits dont work. we use them also but it never hurts to have skirted baits especially when they are prone to hit a certain color and no one can say blue/white islander dont work superbly for billfish. i just dont not see the point in not allowing skirted baits and trolling birds in the tournament. Maybe he just wants to do it the “Barta Way” no offense to the man

okay a pro said that what thay are catching them on, last weekend hookup up 250# blue behind bird with skirt, boat on this forum that released 3 sailfish has trolling birds hanging off rods in the background also says they are hammering new skirts- yes they may catch billfish but make lures captains choice so if someone wants to try for the dolphin or wahoo catagory they can with greater sucess- not argueing with you but just trying to figure out why they wont allow skirts and birds-part of fishing is adapting lure/lure color to the fish’s preference- why rule out that aspect of fishing
also he goes on to say absolutely no pitching or casting or skirts execpt for kings then he says a pitching rod may be used ???
i dont care cause im not fishin just trying to understand
