6/11 Bottom Trip Late Report

Decided to do a full day of bottom fishing after reading Sail Flow the night before. Left the Sands at 5 to try and catch some menhaden off HHI and after 20-30 minutes with only half a dozen caught we decided to not waste any more time and push out.
The plan was to run to the Ross and sabiki some live bait only to reach our destination and remember the buoy is no longer there. Throwing a wrench in that plan we cruised up to the R7 to only get skunked on live bait again…So squid it was.
First spot was 150 feet of water where we quickly started to fill the box with B-Liners, 5 keeper endangered snappers (All released safely) and a short gag. After having two boats fly into our position and quickly throw anchors right behind us when drifting we decided enough was enough and ran into 90 feet to catch some BSB with 1 live bait remaining.
Reaching our spot in 90 feet we had huge schools of AJs top water and good looking bottom. Decided to send the last live bait down to welcome a good tasting gag grouper to the bag. Circled back around and picked up some of the AJs for the fight when a Cobia decides to check us out. Pitched everything we could at the Cobia for 10 minutes and nothing. Only wishing we had one more live bait. No keeper BSBs this trip…Not sure if all the AJs spooked them away from our spot or what.
Ended the day with 20 B-Liners, 1 Gag & 1 Grunt.

Nice fishing! I think it’s about time to open up the snapper again.

^^^ What he said, open it up before they sell our share down in the gulf.
