Fished down near the deli in 800 feet trying to find a few decent fish. Water was warm, but we found a rip that had some scattered weeds and a few dolphin. Missed a big wahoo on the down bait, and caught a white marlin. The fish was bleeding very bad and hooked deep (7/0 7731d), so we threw it in the box and made preparations for the smoker. All in all a very slow day, but fun none the less.

Good on ya. Sounds like the fish was hurt pretty bad…it happens. Glad you spent the little extra time and money to get your HMS permit so you can enjoy it instead of the sharks. Two thumbs up sir.

You can’t buy class like that…not even with a paeso.

Pretty work. I hear they’re almost endangered, but they still taste great. I guess in the big scheme of things, the longliners kill thousands per year, and we should be able to stroke a few for the smoker as well. We had loggerhead eggs last year while camping on Hunting Island, and I swear they taste better every time we scramble them.

Short grass and tight lines, make a man feel so fine!

OS,

I used to have a Scottie Craft myself. Great boat. With those 454’s, I bet that thing will pass anything but a gas station…LOL!

That marlin should taste great in the smoker. I’ve never smoked a white, but I’ve done blue (pacific and atlantic), striped, shortbilled spearfish, and sailfish (pacific only). All were delicious. We made quarts and quarts of smoked marlin dip and gave it away as presents. And just to be clear, I normally release all my billfish, but I’ve kept the above fish in similar circumstances described by OldSchool.

Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’

OldSchool,

I have grown up hearing my Dad’s stories of the old days in the Scottie Craft. He said they used to go out without a compass and just an AM radio to help them get back. Don’t know how much truth to those stories but to a little kid they were awesome. Hope to see you out there.
