Monday: fished off to the right, 90 feet using live menhaden (Shem Creek): 5 Scamp (15# to 9#), 1 Cobia (54.55# @ HPT), loads of black, orange, pink & gray, oh and a few dozen Reef Donkeys! Cobia fought hard and was gaffed on first try.
Friday: same bottom, live menhaden and a few dozen critters sabikied @ #10. 5 Cobia (biggest @ 45.3#), 2 ARS (biggest @ 27#), 2 Scamp, 6’ shark, green eyes, lots of teeth… other critters (mahi too) and surprisingly few AJs. Bright Coney was a surprise too. 4 Cobia Chinese Firedrill: one was hanging close to a hooked one while coming to gaff, little devil said “go for it”, freegaffed it quickly and they all started the cockpit dance until I finished damaging fiberglass.
Big Cobia was caught later. Good fight but she came alive at the initial gaff attempt. Sounded several times and had to look at both sides of the boat a few times. Wore Jason out! 15# of drag and a lot of thumb pressure.
Box was full by 1230. Nice to get in early and have things cleaned up before the mosquitoes come out.
EDIT: Sorry folks, not a Coney, it was a Toro.
Where are all the Internet Mensa Police?
Man…how in the world was it that smooth out there today. We went yesterday not far from the hole and it sucked. You must have been south. I have heard it’s been less windy south of the GTH.
RS: we left out of Charleston, well south of GTH. Far end of Charleston 60 on Maps Unique.
Monday was better Wx but no clouds. Friday had some clouds and when repositioning we took a few over the bow. Seems like once we got back into 60 feet the occasional steep ones were gone.
