You really don’t need to worry about what species you’re catching…pull em up and put em in the cooler. The law dogs don’t have enough funds to police all the water so the odds are in your favor.

Don’t say they’re not common - NOAA will close the whole (**() ocean!

They hammer the silks in the Florida straights, but usually in deep water. In West End, Bahamas, 90% of the deep drop catch I see at the docks is silk snapper (aka “yellow eyes”), but those guys are fishing in like 600’. It’s not because these guys are expert fishermen. They are pretty much a guarantee on that side. It’s like bream fishing in a stocked pond.
