Had my old fraternity brothers down to Edisto (Wofford Class of 1988). 3 of the 5 had never been on the ocean before. Got a late start due to a late night. Nice ride out. Dropped in about 130 and immediate had a couple of peanuts. Decided to push out. Should have stayed there. Found nothing out to about 300ft and had to turn back due to heavy rainclouds. 2 guys on the boat sick, another scared #**@less. Fishing gods felt sorry for us and had the white show up in about 250ft. One of our regular rods was in the shop for some drag work so we drafted an old 20# outfit which of course the fish hit. Thrashed a little on the surface then made a big run that almost drained the reel. Finally got him in and got my old buddy his first billfish. Ended up in the middle of a storm so we pulled em in and ran back through the storm. Put lines back in at ledge and trolled in. Couldnt resist the 5 gal bucket trick on one of the new guys. We all had a good laugh, then looked down and there was a nice dolphin literally about 3 ft off the transom. Brought him in for dinner and then called it a day. Terrible fishing but great day 6 old guys wont ever forget.
I thought it was referencing throwing someone in on their first marlin. If I was thrown in 60 miles out, I’d be quite upset but if you drenched me with a bucket, I’d laugh.
Another thought is that since everyone has go pro’s these days, someone should create a bucket trick video thread.

I'd love to see the reaction when they pull up a bucket after a good fight! I did basically that to my buddy one time in the surf, tied all the 3oz+ weights to his line and threw it back out there.. LOL
