Ran through North Edisto River at daybreak with my mother. Told her before we left that I have nothing in mind for a destination…All I wanted to do was troll around 100ft out to 130 ft pulling baits, and looking for new to me bottom numbers. Didnt know what to expect, so I told her to expect nothing. Took a 130 heading and greeted a beautiful ocean. From 60ft on out to 100 ft there was life everywhere…bait, bonita, flyers, etc. Pulled back in 100 ft to deploy spread, and start studying the bottom. Planer gets hit within 10 mins…king jumps out of water with bait and spits hook. Minutes later, outrigger gets hit…king in boat…pulling hook out of kings mouth, and look up to see flat line going off…Gaffer bull dolphin in boat. Found some decent bottom, but kept going deep to keep trolling out to 130ish. 120 ft…outrigger gets hit pretty hard. Half of 30 international spool is taken with no intentions of stopping. Ask my mother to put boat in neutral, and clear lines. Fish keeps running hard, and just like that we lost it…no clue what it was. Get lure back to boat, and half the leader was chaffed really bad. Deploy spread again, and stayed in that 115 to 120ft range for a good while…went through a whole pack of ballyhoo, but couldnt seem to stay hooked up…very frustrating. No life at all deeper than 120 ft. Most trolling action in 100 ft out to 120. Came back in and hit those bottom numbers in hopes of a grouper…To no avail. Picked up a few decent sea bass, and called it a day. Greeted the storm in North Edisto, and home by 4:00. Fun day beautiful ocean.
