6/30 Report

Went out to Capers reef, got a later start than I wanted and ended up lines in around 10. Was hoping for my first Spade, but didnt even see one, let alone catch one. Had a bunch of different fish, maybe 5 or 6 different species including my first Lion fish.Caught a bunch of BSB, on live shrimp, clams and also jigging.
Had a fish eaten of the hook on the way up, hardly event felt the fish being hit it was so quick, assuming it was a shark. kinda weird in that I was taking the hook out of the fishes mouth, which was really all that was left of the fish, it was still moving around as if it didn’t realize it had no body.
Had a 3.4 to 4’ skinny brown fish hang around my boat for half an hour or so, couldn’t get it to take anything, not sure what it was.

Hit the jetties on the way back, and the grillage, but at that point i was pretty tired.

Did see the large boat still caught up on the rocks.

Cheers

I guess he zigged instead of zagged.

Great report. Cudas love popping fish on the way up. So fast you can hardly feel the hit.

Sullivan’s Fire Dept & CG rescued the crew of that boat last Thursday. No injuries. Definitely unfortunate.

Maybe the brown fish were cobia? Best to jump in with the spear when you see them and hold on.

Anytime someone saw their first cobia on my boat, they would always start yelling that they see a “shark!.. right there!!” Cobia will hang under the boat for long periods of time. If you have an live bait, toss it free-lined right to him. Otherwise, smack the water, splash around crazily and drag the biggest lure you have back and forth in front of their faces. Eventually they get freaked out and bite it. Then… hold on!

Not brown, but cuda will just sit right under the boat and appear every time you try to reel a fish by them. You may have had a few of each. Cuda are a blast to catch for the newer fisherman. I actually never got tired of them and would target them for newbies later in the day, using surgical tubing lures. They are the nearshore/poor mans sport fish to me. They’ll jump 10’ in the air when hooked. The surge lures tore them up!
