Finally I worked out a time to get down to Charleston to wet a line. I called up Black Bart and a buddy from work and plans were set. The weather however never works out with my plans.
Headed out at 4:30am for 60 feet. Seas were not bad going out was able to cruise out ending up on some bottom in 80 Ft.
Fish were everywhere in the water. Cobia were crusing and there were huge schools of spades.
It was a great day on the water fished til about 11:00am and then headed in. Ride home was fine but as we hit the shipping channel the wind really picked up due to the storms. We wondered what a cc was doing passing us going out.
Caught BSB, B-Liners, Trigger, Cobia, Donkeys
Highlight of the day. Scott caught a bsb, a cobia decided to follow it up and hang out behind the boat. While I tried to get the cobia to eat my hook, I told Scott to leave the fish in the water hooked up for a moment to see if I could get anywhere with the cobia. A big donkey decided to make a meal out of the bsb and it was on.
20lb poly and donkey made it a super fun day.
Good time with good people. Thanks again for having me along, Cliff. And thanks to the “Bottom Fishing Whisperer” for bequeathing some of his knowledge to us.

AJ’s are actually one of my wife’s favorite-eating fish. And she’s had plenty of dolphin, 'hoo, grouper, snapper, YFT and all the other popular species. Just avoid the worms (if they’re present), cook properly, and enjoy. My $.02…

AJs eat great if the worms don’t turn you off. Every bit as good as grouper or snapper. It’s strange we catch a bunch of them in the GOM and they don’t even have worms. Wonder why ours do?

That’s about the way I feel about catching them. After I catch one, I pass the rod to a younger man

I’m thinking about trying it within the next couple of weeks, my boat’s a little smaller than yours but it should handle the trip fine as long as it isn’t too rough of a day… thanks
They will be fish tacos or something on sat. I have heard the stories but people turn their noses up at all kinds of things I like to eat.
We got some great filets from them minus the tail sections that has the worms in it. My crew loves them, I figured I would give it a try.

I eat them. To me, they are like a combination of mahi and wahoo. Thick like a wahoo steak with the texture of the mahi. Fantastic marinated in Italian dressing and cooked on the grill. Like you, I have no problems cutting around worms. Have to do it on grouper sometimes too. Not throwing those back in season either.

It took over an hour because we make a stop at a floating root ball in 65 ft to a see if there was anything around it.
Glad you made it out there and had a productive and safe day. Maybe we can buddy up another time. Glad to see someone else who enjoys eating the AJs, too. Just as good as cobia in my opinion.

AJ is an a great tasting fish. Marinated it and on the grill at a friends house, I took it to a party last night and there was nothing left after the word got out there was fresh grilled fish in the kitchen. AJ’s will always take a ride to the hill in my boat.
Trigger on the grill with some blackened seasoning on it was very good as well.
