Left Wappoo and rode out to 230 ft. Missed 2 fish within 30 minutes. After a short coaching with our rookie angler things started looking better. Stayed within 280ft. to 325ft. Caught 4 nice dolphin and 1 slinger . Missed another nice bull and headed home early to stay ahead of weather. Rigged half the spread with mono and the other half with wire noticing no difference in outcome . I’m going to keep doing this for a the rest of the year for some reason. Redneck education I guess.

Thanks for the report. Absolutely not redneck education…how are you going to learn what works without trial and error? Rigging and rerigging and testing things is how you get better. Half the people on this site want to learn only from others telling them without putting work in so good job to you for joining the few who put extra work in to learn on their own! It will pay off, so keep doing what you doing

i tied a bunch of mine with 6 in bite lines. had a phin hit a lure with 285# cable the other day

My only billfish came on a kingfish rig…never say never…

I have some darker lures that I always keep on wire… I catch dolphin on them with no noticeable difference. I have also had days where my wire rigs were getting the most action. Note: this could be because of the darker colors, as I do not have bright colors with wire on them.

I was told we were wrong for using wire but that is what weve always used. Fast and simple but if I could catch more fish i’m willing to change. If nothing else we are learning new techniques. Thanks for encouraging comments and advice.

Since the YFT are not here the need for fluorocarbon is nil. Wahoo . dolphin and kings are not wire shy… Cudas aren’t either. Wire will save you lots of lures.

Yes, I was wandering what the outcome would be with wahoo and kings on mono.

a zing sound for about three seconds ^^

Knot to good. Saw your doormat on the inshore, Heck yea.

Play the numbers game.
Let’s look at a couple of scenarios:

#1)You pick up two wahoo in two bites using wire.

#2)You experience 6-8 cut-offs but land 4 wahoo using mono.

Which would you prefer?

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Understood. I prefer scenario #2 . Guess I will have to practice up on my crimping. Thanks for all the input.

When me and my dad first started fishing we rigged everything with wire for several years. We managed to do pretty good with the dolphin, wahoo, and even caught a grand slam one trip pulling an entire spread rigged with wire. However, once we learned a little more we switched over to mono, caught more fish than we ever had before, and never looked back. From my experience Id say you can have some good days pulling wire, but you’ll catch more pulling mono.

So far my crimping seems to be holding. Is there anything special i need to know about crimping? Using 80 pound with steel crimps. Thank’s a lot!

You can spend money on a really nice set of crimpers that you can adjust crimping poundage if you really want to get serious. If not, you still want to go buy a quality pair of crimps with multiple knotches for different size crimps. The first dozen or so you do, take the hook and put it through one of the towing rings of your truck, put a pair of gloves on and put some weight into it. See what gives first, your crimp or the line.

I also do not crimp flush from one end to the other if I can help it. Leave a millimeter of space on each end of sleeve uncrimped.

Being new to crimping with the risk of having crimps slip while you’re figuring it out, you can always take a lighter and melt down the tag end to a bulb. This gives you a little protection from your line pulling through (not much but may save you on a fish or two).

Gotcha, One last question would be to crimp or tie. Thanks for all the info.
