6/8 mixed bag

Had a very short window to kid the family out this morning. First Saturday we’ve had without some sporting event. I did not have time to catch any bait and decided to go with Trout Tricks for everyone. I normally use bait when I have the whole family just for ease, but I remebered Optiker saying here one time how easy it was to have the kids use the TT’s so off we went. We caught trout, lady fish, redfsih and even a croaker. The only redfish we caught was in the 26" range, the trout in the 14-15" range. We only had about 2 hours to fish, but had a blast. I will say fishing this way with kids is very easy. Because you are working the lure at a slower pace you don’t have to worry about so many people casting so frequently. Everyone is ready to get out again. May try to sneak in an after work trip this week.

That’s awesome Andy! My first intro to TT’s was with me as a complete newbie and my 2 boys who were about 6 and 9 then. It was a charter with FishingWithBob and once he showed us the proper technique we whacked em. 27 trout in late august on an unscented, unrattling artificial bait. That made me a believer then and still! My 6 yr old out-caught us all.

Andy and David, Thanks for all you both contribute to fishing, especially to the kids. Not to mention what you have both done for the TroutTricks. Bob

I haven’t boated the first fish with a TT yet, used it all over the Stono last week. Wife was using shrimp and catching fish, me nothing.

I’ll keep trying, watching Fladds pics here means I’m doing something wrong…

meks - I feel your pain. I don’t have much luck on artificials and almost always revert back to live/cut bait. Maybe its the time of year? Maybe I’m just cursed? ha who knows

Two things will help you with TTs (and other artificial lures). This has been my personal experience by applying what I have learned from others:

  1. Use the setup and technique that Bob recommends (on his website and many times on CF.com - in general, use a 1/8 oz jig head and give a couple quick jerks and let it fall straight down). I always see people change the setup to what they think, ie. 1/4 oz jig, different presentations. They will work, but not nearly as well. I’ve seen a difference between letting it drop at an angle vs straight down. Straight down is much more productive. Change the jig weight and you change the sink rate. Another key is that the 1/8 oz has a slower sink rate than you might be used to. It falls at about 1 ft/sec. Cast out and wait patiently for the jig to reach bottom before beginning your retrieve. It might take 15 sec if you are in 15 ft of water. That will seem like an eternity.

  2. Do you use a trolling motor? I run a bank, and cast to points and structure and cover a ton of area. When I catch one, I linger there a while in case they are schooled for some reason. If you anchor up and dwell in one area I don’t think your results will be nearly as good, unless you are lucky and just happen to anchor on a bunch of fish.

Do these things and I promise you that they will work well
