The weather forecast called for lake like conditions all week so the 4 of us took Rose Marie out on her 4th trip this year. After checking again on Friday, we decided to get the trip in on Sat thinking the forecast would deteriorate quickly by Sunday. It wasn’t as nice as it was supposed to be but the sky was blue and we had a nice breeze all day. Rode out at 25 kts on a calm ocean, the 1-2 close interval head sea kept me from running any faster.
Fishing was slow for us all day. We headed to the Banks and stopped shallow, picked up 2 right off the bat at about 0645 in 130’ then pushed off into deeper water. Made it all the way to the 226 and turned around. Finally at 1330 back on the ledge around RT we started picking at them again. Had a mystery fish take half a spool on an Avet 30W with a #2 planer. Had him hooked good and the new guy accidentally put the reel in freespool, backlashed it and broke off. No harm, we ribbed him the rest of the day.
Ended the day with 5 good sized phins 10-26 lbs. Stopped on the way back and picked up some b-liners. The wind picked up to the east and gave us a nice ride back at 25 kts. Had a great time.
Andy on his first ever Phin.
