Could anybody recommend a company for obtaining a USCG OUPV? I would prefer the Charleston area.

Sea School Charleston. Just got mine. Capt Rich is hilarious and a great teacher.

I took my exam prep course back in the late 80’s thru a company called Houston’s Marine (www.houstonmarine.com) based out of Kenner, LA. It was before the internet so it was a home study course just to get you ready for the USCG exam which you took at one of the testing centers - NY, Baltimore, Charleston or Miami at that time. You can take the course and do your USCG exam at Sea School over on Daniel Island now days though and after you’ve compiled your required sea time, drug screening, first aid course and TWIC card take it to the CG and apply for your license. I wonder if they still make you do the nav/plotting for the exam?

I think you do still have to do the plotting. Unless you get a inland license, which is only good for a few miles offshore. If you get the inland license you can go back and take the plotting portion of the class and upgrade your license.
I have my inland license, I didn’t and still don’t need anything else right now.

I did see where they have proposed making these changes as well as others to the requirements for the less than 200 GRT license

The requirement to complete a Medical Care Provider course will be extended to all licenses authorizing service offshore.
Applicants for licenses under 200 GRT, Towing Vessel Master or Mate, and Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels will have to take a 3-day course and be certified in First Aid and CPR.

New licenses authorizing service on near coastal waters for vessels under 200 GRT on international voyages will be available.
With these licenses you will be able to operate in the near coastal region in foreign waters (as defined by that country), but qualification standards include completion of approved training in 12 subject areas, with the length of the courses yet to be determined.

The license structure and qualification standards for licenses under 200 GRT limited to U.S. near coastal waters are unchanged, except for one important and beneficial difference.
Tonnage limitations will be set at 25, 50, 100, and 200 ton increments, meaning a person working on a crewboat who wants to increase his tonnage will no longer be stuck at 150 GRT.

You have to do plotting for inland and near coastal. Set and drift are fun . If you practice it is easy.

Sea School has a great facility near the Daniel Island Marina. Excellent instructors. Outstanding customer service. I had issues renewing my license many years ago (due to a health issue). The folks at Sea School Charleston were instrumental in getting the renewal pushed through. Highly recommend them.

It might be required now, but I assure you I did not have to do it to get mine.

will have to take a 3-day course and be certified in First Aid and CPR.

Now there’s 8 hours of wholesome instruction crammed into 3 days. Typical federal training management … :face_with_head_bandage:

I used Sea School Charleston around 1992 or so and it was great. Well prepared for the exam thanks to them. CPR and First Aid should be a part of the course, just like I believe CPR should be required to graduate high school. Anyway, remember if you are doing any commercial work to be sure and have your TWIC card.

Required now. I had to take 53 hours over 2 long weekends.

53 Hours!!! you should have come away from there with an EMT certification. I’ve got to renew this year, I sure hope I don’t have to take 53 hours of first aid/CPR to renew mine. I have always just signed up at the Red Cross for the one day class and gotton by with that.

The 53 hours is for the 6 pack. Red Cross gets you for about 3.

I have no intention of chartering but would like to get my capt license just as a goal and personal achievment. What would somethng like that at Sea School cost? Just a rough estimate?
Thanks
Rick

if you want to get your license, you will spend around $1000.00 to get it. If you want to take the course and not hold a license…just the cost of the class…and it counts as a 54 safety class…check with your insurance (non-commercial)you may get a rate reduction.
