Looking to purchase a 6 weight soon and wondered which of the TFO 6wts might be best. I am trying to keep it in the tfo price range since it won’t get used as much as others. That is unless i find a GLX classic 6 for a good deal…
I know this may be stating the obvious, but it really depends on what you’re planning on doing with it.
I like the Professional series. It’s one of their cheaper rods, but it’s got a smooth, slow action that I can cast really well. HOWEVER, it comes with all the disadvantages of a slower action rod (i.e. harder to cast in the wind, harder to turn over heavier flies, and will simply turn to a wet noodle if you have a faster/stronger cast.)
For throwing heavier flies or if you prefer a faster action, I’d check out the Clouser or TiCrX.
And though I haven’t cast them personally, I’ve heard good things about Colton fly rods. I just checked out their website, and they’re having a holiday sale through Jan. 15 - 50% off all rods. They still have the Slipstream 6 in stock, but you may want to act fast if you’re interested in it.
Thanks. Wet noodles are out, looking at but cant decide between BVK, Axiom, Clouser, TiCrx etc. Be nice to cast some, but nowhere around stocks 6wts with full wells and fighting butts.
the 6wt ticrx is bad ass. I have held the bvk but not casted it. it is lite. I think the ticrx is the way to go.
chris.
I was saving my pennies for a 6wt. Crosscurrent GLX but got impatient last year and picked up the 6wt. TiCrX. It casts nice and I have gotten a lot of use out of it with no complaints. I keep it rigged in a tube in my truck in case I have to “work late” If you are around Johns Island/Seabrook drop me a line and we can meet up so you can put it through the paces.

Good deal, may take ya up on that!
I’ve got a 6 weight TFO Axiom, as well as a 7 weight Colton Tradewinds. The Axiom is an absolute cannon. Mine has the fighting butt and feel confident in being able to handle some bigger fish with it. It’s a super fast action rod that is definitely built for long range casting. I like the Colton Tradewinds as well, but it’s got a pretty soft tip in comparison to my Axion and St. Croix fast action rods. Both the Axiom and Colton are cool looking rods too, since I need to look good on the water when I’m getting skunked haha. I also own two 5 wt. Professional series TFO’s, but those are definitely slower action and more suited to freshwater trout fishing IMO. Never cast a TiCRx, though it would be interested in trying one out and compare to the Axiom.
There is no normal life, there’s just life.

BVK is the bomb - super light. BVK if you want finesse. TiCrX if you want something more poweful. I would go with one of those two.
