60 hp yamaha wont go past 2000 rpms

So I took my skiff out today and it ran well for about 10 minutes. then it wouldnt go past 2000, 2200 rpms. I dont know what is going on. i am going to look at the water/fuel separator right now. also i can have it in neutral and go up to 5500 rpms and it is fine, its just when its in gear that it wont go past 2200 rpms. any help is much appreciated. thanks

sounds like a fuel problem to me. My old 60 yammie was doing that, and a simple carb dismantle and clean fixed it. 2 injectors were gunked

sounds like a fuel restriction
but check spark and compression first

Thanks for the responses. its a 2004 2 stroke yamaha and it has been used regularly- not been sitting for a few months.

I had the same trouble with an 01 70. Turned it to be this. Got everything cleaned up and it runs better then it has in a long time.

i emptied the water fuel separator and changed the sparks plugs. im taking it out tomorrow for a test run.

You need a carb rebuild.
