60 on 4/12

Headed out for some bottom fishing at the 60, water temp was 69. Got two limits of BSB. The Spanish were thick out there. We threw everything we had every time a school went by the boat but they weren’t interested. Saw another boat trolling but didn’t see them land any either. Had a mystery fish jump and make a huge splash 20 yards behind the boat while we were looking the other way. Whatever it was lounged around on the surface 100 yards away from us staying pretty still, we could see its fin but couldn’t get a positive ID. Definitely wasn’t a shark or dolphin. Headed in to the jetties and anchored up within casting distance of the rocks. Had two sailboats decide it was ok to sail BETWEEN us and the rocks.

You probably saw a sunfish. One of the largest of all bony fish and I see them jump out of the water often this time of year. They also like to sit near the surface and warm up and let gulls eat their parasites which they are often covered with.

After looking at a pic, I bet you are right about the Sunfish. The fin looks similar to what we saw.

Sunfish are crazy looking. Had on jump 30 yards from the boat at the 60. huge splash. He hung around for a long time just under the surface.
