Guess I’ll start at last point.
-
Was starting and running good in neutral.
Now having hard time starting and runs chitty. Kind of spattering and rough.
-
Compression was between 150 and 160.
Now starting from top to bottom it is 160/140/150

Drop off test goes like this: pull wire from top plug/good fire but no difference in the way it is running even with wire 4 inches from plug.
Pull middle wire and hear a good spark but engine shuts down as soon as boot clears the plug end.
Pull bottom wire and good fire and motor keeps running even with wire 3 to 4 inches away. Bottom wire cracked around end of boot where it makes the 90degree bend but that can’t be my whole problem.
Checked fuel for water found none. No blockage at fuel pump strainer. All lines were replaced 3 months ago.

Simple, the middle cylinder is the only only one you’re running on right now. The top and bottom carbs are gummed up so bad they won’t work any more. The middle one is probably hanging on for dear life. Get your carbs cleaned and it’ll run like a top. Every time you pull it out of the water, you should unhook the gas line and run it until it cuts off. Then the bowls will all be dry and have no chance of gumming up again.

Or keep running it like it is and the motor will seize up from running lean on 2 cylinders and then you can just buy a new motor and not worry about this one anymore.
Tigerfin, it actually started and ran smooth before I cleaned the carbs. There is no way 1 and 3 is gummed up. This is the first tank since cleaning.
Fishinnut,I decided yesterday to leave it alone until next weekend. At that time I plan on pullin carbs again and trying some spray cleaner and blowing out with compressed air. Not gonna take a chance on makin it worse. Anybody know what the compression should be and how much difference is acceptable.

Pulling carbs and spraying with carb cleaner is not cleaning carbs. They need to be completely taken apart, soaked and then rinsed and dried with clean compressed air. If you don’t, then you are pissing in the wind. After that its reinstall and link and sync. A five dollar can of carb cleaner is a waste of money if that’s all your gonna do.

I did the soak ,rinse and dry with a air compressor the first time.

carbs aren’t getting fuel
dirty, improperly assembled, something isn’t right

My guess, as one old johnson owner to another, you have carb problems. They need a(nother) complete tear down/cleaning.
You need compression, fuel, air and spark. 'Sounds like spark is good. Hard to keep air out of the mix. You have reasonable compression. You have an old Johnson. Ergo, your carbs aren’t happy, yet.
Any reason to think your timing might be off? If you have not messed with it, it will be fine. If you have messed with it, and it is way off, that might be an issue.

Havent messed with anything but the carbs.

Do you have a spark tester? If not, get one. Very inexpensive. With it, test each cylinder. Then, you’ll know you have good compression and good spark. The only thing left is the fuel/air mixture and that is the job of the carbs.
I’m still betting you have carb problems. If spark checks out good… Get a new carb kit. Tear 'em down and rebuild them.
