Yesterday AM I was topwater fishing when I noticed a small school of fish had some small bait pushed up against the bank and were blitzing them. Since I am an “opportunistic” fly fisher, I saw an opportunity

Based on the behavior I assumed they were bluefish. Positioned at casting distance (not too far for me, I admit!), and as long as I got the fly to within 2" of the bank I got an instant hookup or follow. I was throwing a fly of my own creation. A black deer hair muddler with a white hackle tail.

Hooked up and was pleasantly surprised to see that they were trout! This one was just under keeper size, just about 14". Had another to the boat but had a poor hook set so I lost it.

Pretty fun!

Had some good topwater action too. Ended up with a half dozen trout (to 18.5"), a blue, a lady, and a red.

that’s awesome man. I often think something has to be chasing the bait when I see said bait coming out of the water. Probably should cast at it more often.
